Going to Sam's Club with my wife is frustrating sometimes. She is not a per unit shopper, ie she doesn't pay attention to what is cheaper per ounce or per lbs or per diaper, etc. She just looks at the cost of what two things are that look close in size. Of course, she gets frustrated with me when I take an extra few seconds to read all the tags for that number or pull out my phone to calculate something. It's a match made in heaven.

I like to go grocery shopping with the girlfriend after work and before dinner. We get everything we want.

Does she also only look at the up front cost vs how much you get? What I mean is my wife will only look at what we paid at the register and not how much we got, so it's all on the up front transaction that she judges by. She doesn't pay attention to the fact that we don't need to buy that item for another 3 months. It's the fact that we paid $8 instead of $5, regardless of the fact that we got 2.5 times what the $5 one costs.

It's opposite in my family. When I go shopping, I just go grab the stuff I need, price be damned. (as long as it is close).

My wife will caculate everything down to the penny per unit. While she is thrifty and saves money, to me, it's just not worth my time to extend every shopping trip to save a few bucks.

Maybe we can wife swap for shopping.

I share your feelings on grocery shopping. If there is obvious disparity, I'm going for value, but if i need a calculator to figure it out, i'm just picking one.

You couldn't afford that.

J/k... it's funny b/c my wife is opposite of how she grocery shops when she's shopping for anything else like furniture, stuff for the house, clothes, and stuff like that.

mine is pretty good about letting me figure out the financial details of things but yes, she can do that on occasion. also, what i do on occasion is go on to sams club before we go shopping for a big order at say walmart. I put all the things at sams club into my shopping cart and then print the cart with the prices, so i can compare what's cheaper at walmart compared to sams club. i.e., deodorant is actually cheaper to buy at walmart, where as if you buy the 3 pack of body wash at sams club, you save almost $1 per bottle. a 4 pack of deodorant is about $10, where you can get a double pack at walmart for like $4.

I get stressed over going shopping with my fiance because I take the time to meal plan and clip coupons. When we get to the store, he sees something he wants and wants to change up the whole meal plan for the week which means revising my grocery list in the middle of Giant Eagle. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten or not gotten enough of something because we've had to revise the grocery list in the middle of shopping. It's aggravating.

I keep a pretty healthy stock of pantry staples and fresh produce for snacks (carrots, celery, etc). Meat I'll usually buy a few days worth at a time, produce and fish, it's normally a day to day thing. I live 5 minutes from the Giant Eagle Market District so it's never an issue. It's awesome.
