http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33678801/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/One shooter detained, several others at large. Wow.............I am anxious to find out more details. A single shooter would immediately lead me to believe it was just some guy going nuts, but multiple? Yikes....

The guy holed up shooting at a SWAT team should be taken out with an anti tank weapon. No one else needs to be injured and there's no use letting the ACLU emergency team arrive on time to protect these guys.

A senior administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that the suspect who was in custody was an Army major with an Arabic-sounding name. The official said the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.

Wow an Army Major!??? I could see some 20 year old snapping, but 3 people, one of which is an Army Major is very suspicious to me.

I am EXTREMELY suspicious...and agree with your assessment. An Army Major is two ranks below a full bird colonel. There is no way in hell that a major and two other soldiers conspired to murder fellow soldiers due to "battle stress". I have a bad, bad feeling that they were impostors...but I am waiting to get more info

Especially when two other suspects were arrested.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan has been identified as the shooter.

In a previous report NBC News said a pentagon official identified the shooter to them as a major with an Arabic sounding name, so while I wish it wasn't true, my guess is that it is.

FOX is reporting that he was getting ready to be deployed and "was not handling it well."

A local reporter states he was from Virginia and was a Muslim convert; that takes care of the motive. Anyone want to guess the other two's religion.

Yeah....wow. This had nothing to do with "battle stress"....or the fact that he was allegedly about to be deployed. I have a feeling that he was probably radicalized. I am not jumping to conclusions, merely just looking at it rationally. I am really wondering how the other two are going to come into play. Were the three of them acting alone (as their own little radical group) or were they receiving orders from someone else? If the latter is the case, that is a scary breech.

I think the former is actually worse. The FBI has been more concerned about the lone wolf / wolves scenario since it's harder to uncover their plans without informants. The last dozen or so Muslim plots uncovered in the last few months have had several homegrown types that did their own planning in our country.

A Texas news station apparently referred to him as a Sgt. Major, so it might yet turn out that he is not an officer, but being an NCO would make it worse.

They said he was 40 years old or so. I would be shocked if it was a Sgt. Major...for crying out loud, that is the highest enlisted rank aside from the Sgt. Major of the Army.

I would be outright shocked if it was a Sgt Major. On paper, a Major outranks one, but in reality, no lol.

Yup, apparently that was a mistake on their part, because the dude is most definitely an officer.
He was a mental health professional (psychologist or psychiatrist) and recently received training at Walter Reed Medical Center. Definitely wasn't an emotionally distraught grunt who couldn't deal with being deployed again, as previously alluded to in this thread his motivation seems to have been much more dangerous.
