James Bond Films

Postby pittsoccer33 on Fri Nov 06, 2009 1:24 pm

I was going to make a poll but there are 22 options and I could only put 10 in.

Last night I watched Moonraker and realized that I haven't seen most of them. Which ones are good? Which aren't? Something I'll have to get on during the winter months.

I am a diehard, obsessed James Bond fan. I have probably seen every movie a dozen times. Here are my personal favorites (not necessarily in order).

1) Goldfinger
2) The Spy Who Loved Me
3) Living Daylights
4) Goldeneye
5) You Only Live Twice
6) For Your Eyes Only
7) Dr. No
8) From Russia with Love (might be my top, along with TSWLM).

No matter how many times I watch them I still love them.

If you had to avoid any, I would say stay away from Moonraker and The Man with the Golden Gun. But I would still watch them all.

I really liked how Casino Royale seemed more realistic, but not being a card player I was lost and bored for about a quarter of the film. I haven't seen Quantum of Solace though.

Quantum of Solace was disappointing to me, although I like even the Bond movies that other don't. I loved Casino Royale...thought it was a nice return to a grittier Bond. Overall, I am very impressed with Daniel Craig.

Goldeneye for N64...probably one of the greatest video games of all time.

Somehow I managed to go the first 37 years of my life without ever seeing a Bond film.

I started watching them from the beginning around last Christmas (I think Spike had a marathon on around the holidays, but they're all on all the time on various networks). I burned them all to DVD up to Licence to Kill, then also Casino Royale.

I watched through Diamonds Are Forever. So far Goldfinger is my favorite (**** Galore FTW), then probably Thunderball. Hope to get more Bond in over the holidays this year.

EDIT: Aw, come on, it's her NAME!

Quantum of Solace was unwatchable for me, and I really like Casino Royale.

Of the older ones, my recommendations would probably be Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, and From Russia With Love (starts a lot of Bond tropes). I actually liked Man with the Golden Gun, even if it is completely ridiculous (similarly Live and Let Die).

Is Goldfinger the one with Fort Knox? Whichever one has the irradiated gold is one I've seen.

I'm one of those people who has trouble watching movies that came before about 1980, when they figured out how to edit them faster. Part of why I love Michael Bay movies :face:

I never really liked any of the Bond films until Daniel Craig came along. Casino Royale was awesome, QoS was a bit of a let down, but I still enjoyed it. No matter how many times I attempt to watch the older Bond films something about them just turns me off. As far as the more recent films, Goldeneye was pretty solid, but I never bought into Pierce Brosnan as a super spy. The dude had the suave part down, but I could kick his ass, so that lost points with me.

Yeah, you and my wife. She also really really likes it if I get something either silent or subtitled from Netflix.

How in the world do you watch a subtitled movie? I had to once, I felt like I was reading a manuscript of a play, like I didnt see anything happening on the screen. Kinda like when you're driving, become distracted, and then say to yourself "Holy moly, how far have I gone and and not been paying attention?"

Agreed.

As for the movies, I own them all, but Goldeneye (still need to by it even though it's 14 years old now), but I like Thunderball, Goldfinger, Goldeneye, The Spy Who loved Me, You Only Live Twice, and Casino Royale.

A couple of the 70s Roger Moore ones got a little cheesy IMO, but I still watch them.

With the large amount of absolute crap movies produced by hollywood, I don't understand how someone doesn't watch subtitled movies. Your potential entertainment options expand dramatically.

Heres another question somebody more knowledgable about Bond could possibly answer.

Was there a reason that the Soviet government was never (or perhaps rarely) the villian? Would that been too messy politically (doubtful)? Was there a feeling that any confrontation at all in the real world would lead to a nuclear exchange and that it would be implausible to expect anything else?
