Before the draw, I absolutely would have loved for Iceland to make it. Iceland v Greece with Iceland advancing was the dream scenario. I'll be rooting for Croatia however bc of my ancestry. The whole Croatian F.A. is a bit of shambles at the moment.

I honestly believe Ukraine will give France a much harder time than people think. Doesn't necessarily mean they will win though. When it comes to Sweden v Portugal, give me big Zlatan over Ronaldo any day of the week.

Pretty cool vid. Goalie's shoe is untied. Opponent ties it for him as he would have had to take his gloves off and whatnot. While the goalie is shaking his hand, ref calls delay of game. Indirect kick for the opposing team. See what happens next.

edit: even better realizing it's a tied game.

From what I've read Adu isnt even considering NASL teams at this point.

Correct. The Hounds aren't in NASL muahahaha

Maybe the news is they are moving to the NASL?

Interesting afternoon of games...

The US game was fairly boring, but there were some things learned/confirmed:

1.) E. Johnson and Brad Evans are fine in CONCACAF, but that's about it. If Donovan or F. Johnson were available, E. Johnson probably wouldn't start, but there needs to be a better answer at RB.

2.) Klestjan is apparently in really good form for Anderlecht, but he is still so meh every time he plays for the US.

3.) Johannsson really seems like he should be starting. He was instantly the most dangerous player on the field when he came on.

4.) I don't think he good, but Shea, confoundedly, continues to be a pretty good late-game sub.

France is in real trouble.

So I was up late and was able to watch ESPN FC last night (I really like that panel, btw)- and they were discussing Ghana as a threat to go far in Brazil. They were talking about how Surez' deliberate handball helped to deny them a place in the semis of the previous WC and it brought to mind all of the flak Suarez took over it. IMO there is absolutely no difference between that and a professional foul which denies an attack. It might be cynical, but it isn't cheating. What Ashley young does on a weekly basis is far worse.

I think the difference between diving and what Suarez did is that there are clear rules and automatic penalties for that sort of deliberate handball. Everyone agrees that that handball is a straight red and a PK, so there's no real risk of that sort of thing becoming widespread. Diving is a yellow maybe 1 time out of 10 and more likely to get you a PK or free kick than cost you one. So yeah, I think you're right that diving, at least as currently penalized, does much more to undermine the spirit of the game than what Suarez did (of course, Suarez also dives frequently).

Phil Neville prevented a goal with a handball and has been booked for diving, where is the outrage over what a despicable player he is?

Suarez is despicable for a lot of reasons beyond his handball against Ghana. Whole body of work, and that...

So who would be a good comparable to Suarez in terms of his historical place in the game and on the field conduct?

I would have to say that, on merit, maradona's hand-of-god goal was probably the most significant act of on-the-field cheating in a big game. Though IMO there was something poetic about it in the end- that it came against England what with the Faulklands issue.

Suarez got grief during the WC 2010, please let me know of all his despicable acts prior to that world cup, other than being South American.

Yes there have been some incidents since then but there has been a lot of hypocrisy in how he has been covered.

I'm not sure if you're serious or not.

-He has been suspended TWICE for biting opposing players, 7 and 10 matches respectively

-Locker room altercations where he was suspended by his squad

-Found guilty of racial abuse, suspended 8 games

-Subsequently refused to shake Evra's hand after his return from suspension

-Punching Gonzalo Jara

Your insistence on wanting this to desperately be about his national heritage is puzzling. Are you just deliberately ignoring his entire past?

I am not arguing that. Here is my argument:

For all his transgressions, he should not have been criticized or his character questioned for his handball vs Ghana. These criticisms have strengthened due to his conduct completely unrelated to his handball.

There are plenty of despicable footballers, though. John Terry, for example. His missed penalty in Moscow couldn't have happened to a better guy.

And to support your opinion, you pick a handball by Neville in the EPL vs. a handball by Suarez in the world cup. You also expect people to be outraged just as much by a person that doesn't really have a reputation for anything to Suarez, a guy who has a reputation for being an all around dick? Really?

I think the issue, which I originally brought up, was always about the handball, more than defending anything else Suarez has done.

That said, terry should have received at least as many games for his abuse of Anton Ferdinand, which IMO was worse than Suarez' language; so a case can be made that he was punished more severely than, say, an English player would be/was. That he was cleared was astonishing.
