ESPN 30 for 30

Postby MWB on Thu Jan 07, 2010 9:37 am

I'm usually not into ESPN's self-glorifying programs, but the ones I've watched of these have been pretty good. Each documentary takes an event from the last 30 years and looks at it through the director's eye. Peter Berg did one on Gretzky being traded to LA, there's one on the Ali-Holmes fight, and a pretty good one about the U of Miami football team, among others.

The U was pretty sweet at times....but it did get frustrating and redundant as it went on....and with the commercial breaks it became unbearable and i had to stop trying to watch it

That's what's DVR's are for. You're right though, they could have cut that one down to an hour or hour and a half instead of two hours.

Agree on the 30/30 series. ESPN has basically become unwatchable for me and their hype machine has helped turn me off to most mainstream American sports. That said, the 30/30 series is excellent. I didn't know they were doing one on Dupree but I look forward to it.

I saw the Len Bias and Jimmy the Greek episodes. Both were very good. Could care less about Miami or Jimmy Johnson, so I skipped the U. Keep missing the Gretzky one.

I think I want to see the remaining shows listed above.

I liked the Jimmy the Greek one except for the voice-over guy who was narrating it as Jimmy the Greek. That was a little cartoonish.

It's the last one listed on their website, it probably won't be on for a few months.

Based on the schedule it looks like it could take 30 years for them to finish all of these. The next new one is on March 14 (Reggie Miller) and they don't show dates for any of the others.

USFL one is on tonight at 9pm, then the 17th, and the 25th. Not sure if they'll show the Gretzky one again.

I loved the USFL one. I have no doubt that if they stayed in the spring and not listened to Trump, that league would still be around. Or they they have become much stronger and the strongest franchises taken to the NFL. I was at the first Maulers game which was the only game in USFL history to sell out.

The one on the Baltimore Colts marching band was great too.

The one on the Gretzky Trade stunk. Totally a PR piece for Gretzky.

I have to see the one on Jimmy the Greek, were Brent, Phyllis and Irv interviewed? You have to be or a certain age to get this question.

Yes, they were. It's hard to remember that that was once the only NFL pregame show, and much better than anything on now.

The only ones I recall seeing were the Baltimore Colts marching band (which finishes with the morph to the Ravens mb) - good story save for the Ravens bit - and parts of the Gretzky one.

Not bad.

I liked it too, Levinson is my favorite director (Loved Homicide: Life on the Street and Diner)

I have mixed feelings on the Colts story and since he is such a Baltimore guy I was surprised at how objectively he dealt with the conundrum of losing the Colts literally under cover of night but being OK with snatching a beloved team from another city. Right after divisional rivals the Ratbirds are right up there on Redskins fans' list of hated teams. Mostly due to proximity but I never liked the hypocrisy of taking the Browns away from Cleveland, even after Cleveland has had its team back for a decade now.

Finally got a chance to watch "The Two Escobars." Really fascinating. Goes through Pablo Escobar's ties to Columbian soccer and how it eventually related to Andres Escobar being killed for scoring an own goal in the World Cup.
