In the 50's when he started relievers were used a lot differently too, teams didn't burn through them like they do now.

For instance the 1953 Dodgers (totally random year I looked up) had 14 pitchers on their roster for the entire year, only 4 of them made fewer than 10 appearances, the other 10 all had 25+, and only two of the 10 didn't make multiple starts. This years Dodgers have already used 16 different pitchers in relief and only one of them has made a start.

Watch out for Pedro Cerrano

"Pitcher Justin Masterson carried a live chicken onto the field for the team's pregame drills. The bird, supplied by one of the Indians' clubhouse workers from an area farm, spent most of batting practice standing with Cleveland's pitchers in front of the warning track in center field.

The chicken, unfazed by its surroundings, stood calmly on the field while balls hit during batting practice fell nearby. Several curious players came by to observe the chicken, which was picked up by pitchers Cody Allen and Rich Hill and then carried off the field when the drills concluded.

The bird was given to Allen, who was nicknamed "Chicken Al" by pitcher Frank Herrmann in spring training. The chicken has been named "Cody.""

Didn't Masterson got injured during his last start? Guess he didn't listen to Jobu.

Francona, when asked if he enjoyed the chicken: "As long as he's not drinking beer."

This season has been full of suck. What a crap way for Rivera to have to retire.

I know this has been discussed before, but the whole Mariano Rivera nationwide ass-kissing tour is just weird to me. I understand he's an all-time great, and by all accounts is a very stand-up dude, but it's just weird to see opposing teams trip over themselves telling him how amazing he is and showering him with gifts. It goes way beyond respect to me to just weird and awkward.

When a player of that caliber is retiring, it happens. It happens every couple of years. Most recently it just happened with Chipper Jones last year.

I don't know, I'm a Braves fan and I got tired of hearing about it last year. I don't watch ESPN outside of games and have hardly noticed the Rivera thing. If you do watch ESPN, there are plenty of storylines that are repeated over and over again for months at a time.

I'm a Yankees fan and a huge Rivera fan, and I haven't even really noticed much of the coverage. I watched the Red Sox thing and read about the what the Twins gave him, but not really sure what others have done outside of that.

It seems odd to me that people get bothered by such things. If the same type of thing happens with Crosby in 15 years, what will Pens' fans say about those who complain about such ceremonies?

Selling to retire in January of 2015. Guess he's hoping for a Rivera-like retirement tour.
