They did until they realized that they could get tanaka, which would take them over.

Not surprisingly, Yankees' internal expectation is that they are essentially finished adding this winter: No more pricey free agents.

Glad they are limiting themselves to only spending $471 million this offseason.

I would say that I can't wait for the league to lockout in a few years, but I believe their CBA is covered until at least 2018.

I can't think of anything better than the league doormats uniting together and creating some economic and payroll balance.

If they haven't done it already, why would they do it now? Everyone is making money, so everyone is happy.

For now, they are happy. What happens when your average journeyman outfielder is making $15m in a few years and that luxury tax money from the overspenders is barely enough to sign a few benchwarmers?

What I'm saying is that there's a breaking point coming with these salaries and you would think the owners would say that this is enough. When you have teams like New York and LA with amazing TV deals, the gap between overspenders and teams that are struggling to retain their core players will increase over time.

They've been preaching the same message about overspending for 20-25 years and it still hasn't changed, so what do I know? ;)

The average journeyman is the one who gets nothing in this situation. There are a handful of FA's that get the money from the team's that want to spend, and then it's musical chairs for the rest. I'm wondering when more players are going to start accepting their FA arbitration tags (or whatever those $14M things are). Last year it was Lohse that was bailed out by the Brewers idiocy, Morales isn't going to get anything near $14M, i'm still very curious to see if anyone shells out money to Ubaldo. I can see santana getting an ill advised payday from one of the losers of the Tanaka sweepstakes.

I guess it's really just a situation where middling FA's think they're hot commodities and see big money go out to the top guys, but not realize that isn't an equation such as, Player X got $15M, i'm definitely worth $10.

Brewers sign Garza. 4 years @ $13M per.

I think they're in a bad place throwing good money after bad.

NEW YORK — Major League Baseball has approved a protective cap for pitchers to reduce the effects of being hit in the head by line drives.

The new hat will be available for pitchers to test during spring training on a voluntary basis. Major leaguers and minor leaguers won't be required to wear it in games this year.

The safety plates are sewn into the hat and custom fitted. They weigh an extra six to seven ounces and offer increased protection to the forehead, temples and sides of the head.

Several pitchers have been hit in the head by line drives in the last few years. Brandon McCarthy sustained a brain contusion and skull fracture after being struck, and Doug Fister was hit during the World Series.

The safety hats are made by isoBLOX and were introduced Tuesday.

I like this idea, but why not extend it to infielders too?

How many infielders have you seen take a line drive to the face?

should we wait for the first incident before they allow it?

I'm not saying make it mandatory. Make it optional, similar to what they are doing to the pitchers. I think even with the option, you might have a handful of players (at most) agree to it.

This is both to demonstrate simmons' awesomeness and the stupidity of WAR(not conflicting to use it for both at all...) but...

"Simmons could’ve batted .000 last year and still post a positive WAR figure thanks to his glove alone. "
