I watched this happen live (on tv) and holy carp was it ugly! at first I thought he got spiked but then I saw on the replay that his ankle was bent in an unnatural way. at 38 and in the last year of his contract I wouldn't blame him if he retired.

Arod on the shelf until at least 8/1.
I guess they're stalling until the suspension takes care of the situation?

Yanks: Arod, you're still injured, take some more time.
Arod: I'm ok. I'm ready to play now. I mean Friday, because if it was now that would mean I'd have to play in Texas and they really hate me there.
Yanks: No, MRI says you need more time. Take it.
Arod: I got this doctor who says I'm fine. I'll be ready Friday.
Yanks: Uh, no. Go away.

Of the estimated $24.5 million Soriano is owed through the end of next season, the Cubs are going to pick up about $17.7 million

Has anything like this every happened, with the Yankees getting a player and the other team paying some of the contract?

Why would the Cubs do this if they're paying most of the contract? Its not like they're getting some great prospect.

Guess its just because the Cubs don't have a need for him, save a little money, and get a warm body back. If they keep him, there's a decent chance his value goes down.

Olney's take:

For the Cubs, this is all about getting as much salary relief as they can -- and it won’t be much, given that they’ll pick up the majority of the $25 million owed to Soriano -- and about freeing up an outfield spot to play younger folks who may have a better chance of being a part of their future.

I did not know this:

[Mariano Rivera] found his failure in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series easier to deal with when he learned of the consequences it had for teammate Enrique Wilson. Had the Yankees won the series, Wilson would have remained in New York for a few extra days for the championship parade and would have departed for his native Dominican Republic on American Airlines Flight 587, which crashed shortly after takeoff and killed all 260 people aboard. Rivera told Wilson, "I am glad we lost the World Series, because it means that I still have a friend."

Yeah, I remember that story. Rivera seems like such a grounded guy. Hate that he's retiring.

The funny thing is he wanted to act like it was the right call. No, I don’t play that. I don’t pitch, I don’t play defense, I hit I just hit. Hell, am I even a baseball player?

MLB and MLBPA are supposedly in negotiations now about suspensions and the list is expected to be released by the end of the week. Wondering how many will plea and how many will appeal.

Lots of different stuff out there about Arod. One saying that MLB wants a lifetime ban, but if he doesn't appeal they would agree to the rest of this year and all of next.

Red Sox get Peavy and give up Iglesias to the Tigers, who apparently want insurance with Peralta likely to be suspended. Seems like a good deal for the Sox.

Is this a conspiracy for the league to get the Yankees out of that terrible contract?

Probably, although they'd still owe him $60 million from 2015-2017.

All boils down to Arod, Tex, and Sabathia. Even though the length is bad for Sabathia, that contract was worth it. The other two, not so much.

Yeah, just the big three. Cano is about to get an extremely large contract that will probably be terrible in about 3 to 5 years.

I think the Yankees are also likely to start spending lots of money again, hopefully they'll give out some more bad contract and handcuff themselves again. A $100M deal for Garza is worth it right?

I really don't think the Yankees will be giving dollars and term much anymore. Actually, I see them still giving out dollars, but not term.
