Assuming 2011 for ellsbury was the anomaly with regards to power. That's a lot of money to give to an OF SB guy.

He's 30 and spent a significant amount of time on the DL the past four years. Don't know how many 50 SB years he really has left in him. Good for him, got paid at the right time.

I was up in boston for thanksgiving and asked about them losing ellsbury. Pretty telling that the fans and the organization seemed to have no interest in bringing him back. It should be pretty intuitive that he's not the kind of guy that you committ $150M to .

That being said, I am happy the Yanks made the deal.

Morneau might be able to hit one out of the park in that thin air.

Ok, now it's being reported that the Mariners have signed Robinson Cano to a 10 year, $240 million dollar deal, which ties Albert Pujols for the third highest contract ever.

I'm sure Anaheim is loving how that deal has worked out for them.

Pujols was most certainly on some head enlarging substance....not sure that can be said of Cano. We'll know in a few years if he starts to have continued lingering injuries.

That said, Cano was never really close to the kind of offensive production that pujols had. ridiculous contract.

Crazy Cano contract. He'll be sold off to Texas or LA in a few years for pennies on the dollar.

I truly believe that Mike Trout will be the first half-billion contract when he's a FA (assuming he stays injury free).

Contract is obviously too much, but Seattle had to overpay to some extent. Glad the Yankees didn't do it. Length is too long. Cano is the best at a weak position, so that has to be taken into account. Good defensively and great offensively. I think he'll age ok, but after 6 years, that contract will be bad.

Did the MLB ever get the Yankees out of Arod's contract? Is that still happening?

I really just can't understand why a team would give a 10 year deal to someone who is around 30 years old? Since guys aren't allowed to take steroids anymore, their bodies break down. But, I think it's a good thing. Every immovable contract a team puts on their books creates the potential for value moves in the future.

Completely agree. No one has learned anything from the Arod / Pujols / Hamilton deals. That being said, if they want to spend their money on Cano in this 40's I happy they are doing so.

Feldman would be the #5 in Pittsburgh. That deal is a combination of the astros having a terrible rotation and money to spend.

Yes, but.... The Mariners just got a very big tv contract. They've got money to spend. They presumably did what they had to do to get a player they think will help them in the next few years. So it's either do what you have to do to lure a guy like Cano, or not get a guy like Cano.
