Deal makes plenty of sense for the A's. Guess the cubs were dead set on selling high on samazrdjia. Even though he's young enough and they have the resources to sign him and keep him through Rizzo's prime and Bryant's early years.

Cubs lock up the top 2015 farm system...for what that's worth. So with Russell and Baez maybe they'll move Castro.

I was reading the article about that trade and it said that Jesse Chavez will probably stay in the A's rotation for now. I thought, no way that can be the same Jesse Chavez bum that pitched in relief for the Pirates about 10 years ago but sure enough it is. I was more than a little shocked.

Cubs still have a long way to go, so not sure keeping Samarzdja would make much sense. The guys they get fit their timeframe for being competitive much better than he did.

He's been a nice little success story the last month. Hopefully it keeps up as he was an emergency pick up for my fantasy team and had me a pretty good week. Rooting for the guy.

Anyone want to explain how this isn't a neighborhood play?

Because it's not a typical double play and is more akin to how a play at first is made?

How is that? The hitter beat the throw by like a step, he was turning it. Was that a bad throw? Bad throw to his chest?

The fielder isn't coming across the bag, or straddling the bag, so there's no need to move out of the way to avoid the runner. He's already avoided the runner with how he's established his position, like a first baseman.

I can't imagine that being anything but a neighborhood play. The whole premise of a neighborhood play is to protect middle infielders from aggressive slides, so they're allowed to leave the bag early. The infielder isn't watching where the runner is, so the fact that he slid safely behind the bag doesn't come into play. The 2B isn't pulled off the bag by the throw, it's right in his chest.

Horrible decision by the umpires.

Devils advocate. I can see why they would make that call based on the appearance of the play. However, based on why the neighborhood play is in place, he should have been out.

Ok, yeah I can make the argument too, but along the same lines with the area the ball was coming from, if you set yourself up like you normally would to receive a throw for a double play, you're completely screwed because its going to be a lot closer and you're way more vulnerable.

He definitely fielded it as he should have. I just think the umpires looked at the play in a vacuum. Or they decided that since the runner didn't slide near the fielder then it wasn't a factor. But, like cbear said, the fielder doesn't know where he's going to slide. That said, I would guess that the reason he came off the bag was to get an advantage and get the throw off quicker instead of trying to avoid the runner.

The problem in this case is the bogus concept of the neighborhood play.

yep, and if you now have review - you can't have neighborhood play.

Both can not exist at the same time.

its the cards, they will find a way to crank out production from some ham n egger and once molina will be ready to return, they will be well on their way to the playoffs.

Over the last few years they've been a .500 team when Molina is hurt/not playing. They'll miss him. If the Pirates could pull their heads out of their arses and stop blowing 2-3 games a week due to derpage it might mean a little more.

Phil Gosselin just got called up to the Braves. A second baseman with a hot bat in AAA Gwinnett. This could be the end of Uggla's career in Atlanta...and the beginning of the end of his ML career.

Bumgarner and Posey became the first pitcher/catcher combo to both hit grand slams in the same game in MLB history today.
