Perhaps MLB should rethink a rule that arbitrarily makes some runners safe at home when they're out by 10-20 feet, or at least figure out how to apply it consistently.

I had a lot of managers at lower level baseball getting upset on calling obstruction on the catcher this season. The fielder must have the ball before they are allowed to block the plate. I had a few calls this past season on the catcher where he was running up the line to get the ball or moving to field it and impeded the runner. I don't know if I agree with the rule but in those plays, it's being called right.

The rule says that they are allowed to field the ball in the base path without it being a violation, as long as the ump thinks the catcher had to go there to get the throw.
I agree with idoit. Have a designated spot where the catcher should set up. It seems that most catchers are still used to setting up in front of the plate on the third base side, so will automatically be blocking it. I think a simple adjustment would avoid a lot of this.

BJ Upton may suck with the bad, but at least he leads in one defensive category at his position in the majors: errors.

Braves just got out of a 2nd and 3rd no outs situation unscathed.

Jayson Stark ‏@jaysonst 5s
12 pitches into his evening, A.J. Burnett had more SBs allowed (3) than strikes thrown (2). Don't think I've ever seen that!

The Boston Red Sox landed the services of Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, agreeing to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract, a team source told ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes on Friday.

27 year old centerfielder with plus plus speed apparantly. it'll take one of these guys to flop before teams scale back on these huge cuban contracts.

you can give some guy named rusney 72 million, but the MLB will be damned if the next josh bell gets $4 million in the draft.

It just occurred to me that the Rangers have the worst record in the league. Has their disastrous season been much of a story line?

Somewhat. They were napalmed by injuries and fell apart around mid-May. The media generally doesn't fixate on mediocre/bad teams unless it's Boston or New York.

Adam Dunn traded from White Sox to A's.

I'm still not sure how the MLB trade deadline works. I know there's a non-waiver and a waiver deadline, but this looks like two players traded for each other.

To be traded after the July deadline a player needs to pass through waivers. If he is waived and a team claims him, the claiming team and the current team can work out a trade; or the claiming team just gets him and accepts his salary. If a player isn't claimed he can then be traded at any point up to the non waiver deadline.
