I just watched this past episode. It was awesome. Shows how corporations need to stay out of science. Makes me wonder what's being put into our atmosphere, food, drink, etc that we don't know about just because corporations have shut people up.

So not to mix too many things, but:
My mother-in-law is the type that ask for us all to pray about everything. Her brother-in-law was having a PET scan, and of course asked for prayers. I mentioned to my wife that I'd pray for him to have peace with the results. My wife asked why I'd choose that:

<science part>

Because the cancer has spread or it didn't. The scans only show the result of what has already happened. It has no effect on his health...

And then I remembered quantum mechanics and Schrodinger's Cat and gave up.

I wish there was a international collective that worked together for scientific and exploratory advancement instead of government measuring sticks.

I agree completely. But I imagine too much of the science has military use or potential use.

Hence why it will never happen. Which is unfortunate. The mind is too great to waste on one country.

I'd argue competition drives technology faster.

Eh...science doesn't really work like that though. You don't need corporations to make science competitive. The world of academia and advancement is competitive without the added constraints of working for one country.

Basically all the technology around you comes from countries competing against each other.

No, you don't need corporations to make SCIENCE competitive. You do, however, need corporations to make the technology that science makes possible.

Corporations would be outside the scope of nationalistic pride.

But this is neither here nor there, it was just a pie in the sky hope for international cooperation for the advancement of the human race rather than nationalistic prestige.

We have an 850 MHz nmr here that they had to cut a hole in the roof just to bring it in. It's awesome look, but unfortunately I haven't touched an NMR in 5 or so years.

It's been 17 years since I had to interpret an NMR, but I'd be willing to try to remember for, say, double my usual billable rate. I'll also need a $2,000 retainer up front, please.
