It had absolutely nowhere to go since it was bottled up in the Universe, and the Universe, by definition, is all there is. Every cubic centimetre of space is currently being traversed by 300 photons from the big bang. Tune your TV between the stations and about 1% of the static on the screen is from the big bang fireball.

New military binoculars use brainwaves to spot threats

"A new battlefield binocular system that will let soldiers determine hostile activity from miles away by using their subconscious thoughts in conjunction with a computer.

Under development by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) since 2007, the Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System (CT2WS) — nicknamed "Luke Skywalker binoculars" after the optics used by the "Star Wars" character — interfaces with a brainwave-reading headset worn by soldiers.

DARPA says that the CT2WS system has been shown to catch 91% of threats in testing, up substantially from conventional binoculars that only allowed soldiers to spot 47% of threats in the tests."

Six Italian seismologists and an official have been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison each for “failing to warn” the residents of the Italian city of L’Aquila of the 2009 earthquake in central Italy that killed more than 300 people. Wow. I must have missed the announcement that earthquakes are now predictable with certainty.

I was at Argonne National Lab this past week, and it's absolutely an incredible facility. I spent most of my time at the advanced photon source (really high power x-ray), but I had noticed the construction of a new building that's for energy research. It sounds as though it'll be focused on energy storage and transfer. I case you didn't know, we such at storing energy. That's the biggest problem with moving to solar energy. The solar panels we have now are efficient enough to create enough electricity for us, but being able to store the energy for when the sun goes down isn't up to par. Hopefully in the future (near and far) they can find efficient ways of storage and transfer of energy.
