Meh, I tend to think it is more of a team sport now a days with sharing information, equiptment, and crew members. :D

I do understand your logic completely though.

Never rooted for Gordon - old Earnhardt fan. But had to pull for him over Kyle Busch at the end there. Symmetry, a bit, that he ties Cale at the same track he tied Dale.

The 88 had a strong close, rebounding from 23rd to 10th after the unscheduled pit stop late in the race.

The guy can still wheel a car. As much as he has underperformed with HMS in 3 years, he probably overperformed DEI's capability after Dale Sr's death. And the underperformance has manifested itself in the late race close. Where the 48 of Johnson-Knaus would close strong, first Dale-Tony Jr (both DEI and HMS), then Dale-McGrew, they couldn't seem to put it together late in the race. I was at a race in Richmond in 2008 that exemplified this. The 88 led the bulk of the first half of the race, until he made contact with the 18 of Busch, and it tailed off enough that he didn't get back to the front, but the 48 did finish it off. 88 settled for a 4th. 2008 was not a bad season, but the way 2009 and 2010 went, it sure as heck looks like 2008 was the aberration. I am hopeful that they can continue to turn the corner they showed at the end of the Phoenix race. But they have to prove they can do it.

If they can't do it by Dover, the 88 will have to run the Showdown race to get in the All-Star race, as the auto-eligibility for winning the 2000 Winston expired with last year's event. (Unless, like the Bud Shootout, the eligibility rules have changed again) If they stick to last year's rules, seems he'd be a shoo-in for the fan vote route if need be. But quite a few strong tracks for Jr before Dover, including Bristol, Texas, Talladega and Richmond. Enough that if the 88 has really turned it around, they should break through.

Though after seeing Bayne win the 500 (young new driver/old school team good story), and Gordon breaking his drought (good story), the script seems to be going toward another young driver getting a first win (say an Allmendinger, Ambrose, Menard, or Ragan), and some droughts being ended, like the 5, 88, 31, 17 or perhaps the 47 of Labonte. 88 really needs a non-fuel mileage win though...

last year, 2 tires killed Gordon. this year, 2 tires saved Edwards. Two years, same track, different results.

I am cautiously optimistic about the 88 team this year. Granted, it's only been two races at so-called intermediate or flat tracks, but both times, the team has been able to improve the car throughout the run. Last year, the car got steadily worse in relation to others. I think that Earnhardt is finally communicating accurate descriptions of what his car is doing, and his crew is responding. But the steady improvement throughout the race is a good sign.

Consistancy in the top 10 through most of the first 26 races and averageing top 5's in the last 10 will win you a championship. Johnson has proven that. If Jr. can continue doing what he is doing he really has a chance of having a really good season.

With Bristol, Martisnville, Texas, etc. on the upcoming schedule, there is a chance for the 88 to cement its place in the top 10. Gotta win by the all-star race, or be forced to be the fan vote in.

Gotta set it early, as last year, at the Firecracker 400, the 88 was 11th in points, seemingly on the way up. Instead, they cratered. Even 2008, they were bonzo early, and then tailed off.

Funny, though, on the Chase. Had they used the 2004 chase format, Harvick wins the title, as the shift in initial points going into the Chase would be enough to win it. Regular season champ got a benefit then. Now, the reg season champ gets zilch.

For whatever reason, it seems like Letarte speaks his language. Maybe it's also that Dale realizes that this HAS to work, as the alternative is obscurity in his own JRM equipment. Both driven to succeed, for different reasons, seems to have meshed so far. I don't remember McGrew meshing like that his first couple races in with Jr, but Lance didn't have the luxury of an offseason first. Letarte's something to prove, now that Gustafson won with Gordon 2nd race out, is that the winless streak on the 24 wasn't Letarte's fault. Their direction so far has me optimistic they can end the winless streak before Jr's hits 100/Letarte's hits 75. (think they are at 94/68 now?)

Oh, to have Rockingham and North Wilkesboro back on the sched... and the full course at Sonoma while they are at it.
