Ive seen a lot of these topics come up recently, so I thought it would be a good idea to have an Outdoors thread on here to talk about hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.

Anyway, I am looking to buy a crossbow. Does anyone have one and have any tips / recommendations on buying one?

Most likely. I used to hunt when I was younger, but haven't really gone much in recent years. If I did hunt with it, I would mostly likely only go for buck or possibly black bear.

I know that hunting with crossbows was legalized in PA a couple years ago. I just assumed that it was across the board. Maybe you can only use it on deer.

i didnt mean in terms of legality, i meant in terms of a crossbow actually being able to kill a black bear lol

Lol. Put it this way, if I am going to hunt bear with a bow, it will be with a crossbow and not a compound bow.

I checked the game commission's web site, and you can hunt black bear with a crossbow or regular bow.

You are allowed a side-arm when using a bow. I've hunted black bear with a compound bow and a 44 mag on my side just to be safe.

I've never gotten into it, but I have friends that are big rock climbers. I think that some of the closer places they go are up to McConnells Mills in Butler and Coopers Rocks in WV.

No, I havent. I usually go fishing about 10-15 times per year (never on a canoe though - either wading, on a pontoon or bass boat, or from the shore), but with the new baby, have only gotten out twice this year.

I've rafted from Connellsville to Dawson, and Dawson to Layton. It's a fun trip. I suggest Dawson to Layton. about 3 hours, very little low-water. Connellsville-Dawson is more scenic though, with some abandoned bridges, coke ovens, and the old Overholt Distillery in Owensdale.

Only in Western PA, would coke ovens be considered "scenic".
But that sounds cool.

Going on our annual fall camping trip to my buddy's camp in Clarion this weekend. We always go the weekend closest to 10/10 because the days are typically pretty warm, the nights are somewhat chilly, and the leaves are starting to change. Weather for this weekend looks perfect - high's in the 70's, lows in the high 40's/low 50's, and no rain. Heading up Friday morning and coming home Sunday afternoon.

Every time we have made this trip in the past, I would come home on Sunday afternoon and sleep till midnight, then I would be wide awake until 5AM, then sleep for 2 more hours before going to work. I've learned my lesson, and instead of being dead tired on Monday, I took off to recoup and am going to pick up NHL 12 and play that all day.

As luck would have it, the Pens always have a game on Saturday night during this weekend. There is nothing I enjoy more than sitting around the campfire on Saturday night getting hammered, listening to the Pens game on the radio, and cooking some manly meal on the campfire. It's even a little better this year because the game is a late start due to the West Coast trip. So instead of the game being over at 9:30, it will just be getting started, right in the middle of prime drinking time.
