Some important news for anyone who invests in a Target Date or Life Strategy fund with Vanguard:
https://personal.vanguard.com/us/insigh ... hannel=MFN

They'll be upping the international portion of stocks from 30 to 40% and bonds from 20 to 30%.

I've been wanting to do it (with equities), but have been too chicken to make the move. This gives me the psychological cover to make the switch.

This gentleman's 401k is with vanguard (which is awesome), but the target date funds didn't really appeal to this gentleman. looking back at it, it had something to do with the fund mix, but its hard to remember exactly why that mix wasn't agreeable.

for the record, this gentleman's 401k is 70% S&P 500, 20% bonds, 10% vanguard Primecap

That Primecap fund is interesting; I hope they can keep the (out)performance up.

Agreed. Perhaps this gentleman is a sucker for sipping the cool aid and trying to get the extra juice that primecap is supposed to deliver, but that's the risk you run with pretty much any non index fund. its still relatively cheap and does not have some exotic strategy, so it has that going for it.

This gentlemen has been blessed with knowing a lot about Vanguard, and they are easily the most responsible and ethical fund company out there. The most notable aspect are fees...it's insane how much of your money some other investment firms take in fees, for really no reason. Interestingly enough, the prime cap fund is closed to new investors at the moment.

There's some sort of secret sauce going on.

I probably wouldn't use them (because I'm too Amish or something), but the Wellington and Wellesley managed funds are also pretty impressive.

If I recall, it's large cap value stocks and a whole lot of voodoo with treasuries and corporate bonds. The concern, of course, is underperformance at the worst possible times. Having said that, it's a GR8 choice.

A good reminder that markets don't always work the way you *think* they will work:

Green: PowerShares QQQ Trust (tracks NASDAQ-100 index)

So what's that orange line?
