Interesting article. Said that if BE expansion goes through with the proposed teams, that MWC and Conf USA may just do a full merger for all sports. That would be a 16 team conference at that point.

I thought about this the other day if they would go about this, since they really have no one worth tapping into below them anymore now that the WAC is pretty much drained, and the MAC and Sun Belt suck.

I'm no lawyer either, but it doesn't appear so. Their strongest argument has to be that TCU didn't abide by the 27 month rule.

ACC with two BCS bowl reps. Best conference ever.

I'm hearing that the BE realizes it really doesn't want to have a school in the conference who's essentially being held hostage. Pending the outcome of the hearing today in court, they realize that accept a monetary settlement to waive the 27 months might be the best move.

Meanwhile, the Big 12 might be inclined to help grease the skids to speed up WVU's exit so that they can put ten teams on the field next year and keep the Lucrative TV contract.

I agree, there will need to be an out of court settlement because it doesn't really appear that WVU has a leg to stand on legally.

I would expect that once BE expansion is announced we'll see movement for all three departing schools.

Strangely enough... The fact that the Big East is late on the 2011 Tourney payment seems to be a top issue. WVU is now in possession of the check, but they aren't cashing it because that would imply acceptance or something like that.

I think this is how it plays out. BE will let WVU go for a monetary payment. WVU/Big XII will pony it up, and they will then move on.

Who exactly is joining the Big East? BYU, Boise State, and Air Force turned them down didn't they?

I've kinda assumed all along that the BE would put up a front and eventually accept a buyout. To me the only real question is how much $ it is going to take.

No one turned them down yet.

Right now it's all a game of chicken.

If the AQ of the BCS goes away, then I can see none of the western teams joining. Although a larger TV contract than what they are making now may make it work. It won't be significant, but maybe enough to still make them move.

As for Houston, SMU, and UCF, I think they are all on board, but the BE is waiting for the western teams to figure things out and wants to make one announcement.

I don't care if they change it. It's the brand people recognize. You can say the same about the Big 10, Big XII, and now Pac 12 (which extends into the Mountain time zone), and ACC (PA doesn't even border the coast).

I don't Care if they change it either. To paraphrase Columbias dad, "what do I care, I remember before there was an Eastern Eight, or an Atlantic Ten, let alone a "Big East". I just think its funny, to call a conference with San Diego in it "EAST".

At least there's a huge number of "Golden Staters" attending the recently included PAC 12 schools. I'm not sure there are too many Aztecs from East of the Mississippi.

I think the PAC 12 should expand to include the University of Maine, it'd make about as much sense.

The Aztecs, who entered into the mix once talks between the Big East and BYU broke down, would serve as a travel partner for the Broncos.

SDSU is East of the Pacific Ocean. That is the geographical location they are basing the name on.

SDSU, Boise, and Navy are going to be FB only. Houston, SMU, and UCF are for all sports.

Further clustering up how the conference is structured.
