Ukraine is claiming that pro-Russia separatists were behind the shootdown. Frankly, if that's true then those guys are either getting gifts from Uncle Vlad, or they have taken over far more of Ukraine than I thought. The Buk/SA-17 is beyond what I thought the separatists had in their bag o' tricks. It is a serious piece of kit, and highly mobile. But it's also very complicated and not something you'd expect a bunch of yokels in the hills to be all savvy with.

So apparently a separatist leader named Igor Girkin posted the following to a Russian social media site (translated): "We just downed an An-26 near Torez. It's down somewhere near Progress mine," which is precisely where MH17 was downed.

An-26

777

The An-26 has a service ceiling of only 24,000 feet, and a maximum speed less than half the speed of a 777. If this actually was a case of mistaken identity, then the person in charge of that is a right numpty.

The former, I should think. If not overt gifts, than I bet Uncle Vlad just happened to leave a bunch of mobile launchers just across the Russian border with the keys in the ignition and the engines running.

CBS news has reported that earlier today the separatists started taking credit for the shootdown of another Ukrainian military aircraft, but then retracted and deleted those statements when they realized it was a passenger aircraft.. They're now trying to blame the Ukrainian military, but that makes no sense to me. The separatists don't have any aircraft to begin with, so why would the Ukrainian military be shooting at one? Not to mention that this particular aircraft—traveling west to east—would have already passed over hundreds of kilometers of Ukrainian territory before getting to the disputed area near the Russian border.

Hearing about the Gaza invasion, I'm reminded by how indifferent I am. If those two groups want to kill each other, then have at it.
Just leave the rest of us out of it.

So what happens if Russian separatists shot down the plane? Anything or is it just said it's a tragedy?

I would anticipate a considerable show of force by Putin.

He released a statement pretty much blaming Ukraine for it.

He released a statement pretty much blaming Ukraine for it.

That statement was made very early on in the immediate aftermath of the incident when the notion of the aircraft being shot down was first put forward. It was before any evidence of the separatists essentially admitting they did it had come to light.

If the separatists did, in fact, shoot this aircraft down with a weapons system provided by Moscow..... there will be hell to pay.

(I'm presuming you're referencing the "[t]his tragedy would not have happened if there were peace on this land" comment. (I'm unaware of anything else he's said as regards blame.)

That is what I was referring to. Included with that statement he also said, "And undoubtedly, the state on whose territory this happened is responsible for this awful tragedy."

Maybe he'll change his tune but I doubt it.

I think he may change his tune if countries who have been silent (including China) speak out against Russia for this. This is the kind of event that shocks people into speaking.

Eh, we'll see. The USS Vincennes accidentally shot down Iran Air flight 655 in 1988, and the only "hell" this country ever paid for that was a $61.8 million settlement from the U.S. Government in 1996—which did not include an apology or any concession of responsibility.

His comments came off as America-centric...crass, IMO. I just found it uncomfortable how he briefly mentioned it "may" be a tragedy and then proceeded into a joke-filled laugher. The criticism isn't only coming from the right, for the record.
