I meant losing my home and not just the home but everything that's inside. All my cds and basses and games and computers (with all the stuff on them) and possessions I collected over the years, clothes, documents, jewelry, furniture, everything. When that happens, you don't just lose your 'home', but your entire life. It is about the most awful thing ever.

That's a very simplistic way of looking at it.

Simplistic yet apt. You escape alive and well but you lost all of your possessions. Hardly your entire life...

You clearly don't stuff your prized possessions into your khaki pockets like the rest of us normal-functioning humans.

My family is in the process of reducing our worldly possessions so it doesn't matter as much to me.

Reducing to, say, the size of khaki pockets? If so, you're on the right track.

The thought of starting over from scratch though sucks. Yes they are just possessions, but dammit I worked hard for what I have, and to see it go up in smoke would be devastating.

I will not disagree with this. Even with my families new mind set it would almost certainly be devastating.

I feel the same way.

I understand and fully agree that as long as everyone makes it out alive and unhurt, that is by FAR the most important thing.

But at the same time, I agree with Sarcastic. It would really suck to lose everything you have. There is a lot of sentimental value in a lot of things I own. Things from my childhood that can't be replaced. Some old family pictures. Stuff I have when my babies came home, or from my wedding. And yes, even my games and movies and sports memorabilia that I spent years collecting. It would absolutely suck and would hurt as well.

I'm starting to think some of these guys just have a bed and a fridge in their house.

I'm not comparing life vs possessions, btw.

Plus if heaven forbid my house ever went up when I wasn't home, I would probably lose my two pets as well, and that would hurt me more than any thing else I may lose in the house.

Are you moving? I have found that nothing causes my belongings to undergo rapid depreciation in value quite like the prospect of having to carry them somewhere else.

Haha! Nah. We just decided we don't need all this stuff. So far its been mostly books and book shelves, the TV from our bedroom, kitchen utensils we don't use, some clothes, etc. Working up the gall to sell the PS3 and Xbox.

Boy howdy. New house is 1/3 smaller than old house, which was 3x the size of the apartment we moved from. We expanded to fill the house... and then had to put a lot of it into storage or donate it.

we moved from a small apartment to a townhouse a couple months ago. we got rid of so much stuff, then looked around our new place and thought, "man, all this room! let's fill it up with new stuff." the circle of life i suppose.

We had sort of the opposite. We've moved 5 times between 2006 and 2011. Each time we whittled down stuff but still needed a storage space. When we moved into our home we emptied out storage and realized that we don't need 50% or more of what we have. We still have space (1 whole room is empty) but we don't feel the need to fill it unless a second child happens.

We moved in the summer of 2011 and then this past year. We decided if we hadn't touched it since we moved the last time, it was gone. I was surprised at how much we donated to Goodwill. It was at least 3 car loads.
