It's patchwork, if they knew they were going to be looking to unload hanrahan at $7M, they should have made that move 2 years ago. It seems has his moves are based on avoiding any public backlash.

I think that dominating 8-9 combo they had last year was one of the key driving factors to getting 16 games over 500. They're weaker in the 8th and 9th going forward, and that was essentially a cost cutting move. It's just a stupid move, especially in conjuction with bringing Liriano in to be the 3rd or 4th starter. He's going to tax the bullpen once a week cause he can't throw strikes.

And what's funny about that is he usually faces public backlash anyways because most of his deals turn out to be crap to begin with.

If they made the move two years ago they wouldn't have gotten any value at all.

If Melancon is part of the deal, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him put up the same type of numbers Hanrahan did here.

At the trade deadline a couple years ago there was talk the Rangers wanted Hanrahan and Profar's name was thrown around. Obvioulsy that wasn't going to happen, but there was definitely ample time for NH to move Hanrahan for a legit asset. He didn't know we have a right handed Travis Snider.

Melancon is 27 and has similar or even better stats than hanrahan at that age other than strikeouts. Far better walk rate for MM.

He and grilli would make a solid 8/9 combo, in whatever order

And MM will make 6.5 million less than hanny

There was mention in the Boston Globe today that Franklin Morales could be the 4th guy from the Sox. No idea on the second guy from the Pirates. Again, if relievers are not that valuable, why do we need to trade for three of them?

A bit concerned now about who the second player is for the Pirates, though.

I would be really happy with Morales. Great long guy, and could make some decent spot starts. Would fill the Lincoln role that we missed in the 2nd half.

DeJesus and Holt kinda seem like the same guy, hit well in the minors but not good enough defensively for SS, blocked at 2nd and 3rd by Walker and Pedro..

I'm good with the deal, I think Melancon will be a nice part of the pen going forward and for a good price. Hopefully they use some of the savings to bring someone else in. Almost has to be another deal coming somewhere with all the OF and first base types on the 40 man..
