If Hawpe is playing then something is horribly wrong. The Pirates have a bunch of corner OFs and I think they'd all get the chance to fail before Hawpe plays. This however won't stop people from panicking that Marte will be buried in the minors so Hurdle can play his boy Hawpe.

Well Hurdle's propensity for playing his boys come hell or high water is certainly a cause for panic

If they play that has been, nobody Hawpe over roberto clemente jr I will forever stop watching this team, and I mean it THIS time.

So a catcher in decline for 4 years and Hawpe. And we saved a mil on pitching God. Another successful off season for the cheapskate owner.

Martin was signed for 2 years. And they had a deal with Liriano that's in limbo.

Hawpe wasn't a signing, non-roster invitee.

What would you have done at the catcher position?

I'm not a believer in this team like how you are, but even I thought the Martin signing was decent. I mean who else was out there that we could of gotten to replace Carcass that's in a fair price range.

Keep drinking the kool-aid. The BMTIB slightly upgraded the catcher position and nothing else. Replaced an all-star closer with a 36 year old who was in the minors not too long ago. Tried to sign a starter who had 1 good season over 5 years ago. Woo, he strikes out a lot of batters. Who cares? Lirianos career ERA is as bad or worse than PGJK.
While other teams are adding useful players, our GM is collecting AAAA players. And then DFA-ing 2 months later.
You can't sit there and think this team is any better than at the end of last season. Still no leadoff hitter, AJ "probably" won't have another season like the last one, and the rotation is shaky at best.
But hey, they're gonna have hobble heads and fireworks. So who cares.

Point off the post wasn't the catcher. Point was the BMTIB did nothing to improve the team over last season. Sorry if you couldn't get that.

Isn't improving the catcher position, even if it's a slight upgrade (and it's actually about a 2-win upgrade according to WAR), something to improve the team?

Negligible.
Do you think this team makes playoffs? Finish over .500?

There's not one position that's obviously been downgraded from last year's team. They're still one starting pitcher short and they need someone out of the Snider/Sands/Sanchez/Robinson group to develop. But since they didn't sign Hamilton they're incompetent.

1. Keep Hammer.
2. Sign Bourn
3. Trade for 1 of Morales/Morse
4. Sign 2 FA pitchers with at least winning records.
5. Catcher than can throw a dam base stealer out.
But hey, that'd require spending $$$. And everyone but the sheeple know that's not happening.
