Man without pulse died

Postby Tomas on Wed Oct 17, 2012 3:39 am

The man without pulse (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/0 ... 32880.html) died today, after 200 days after receiving the implant. Apparently it was a liver failure. They could not find a suitable heart for him.

He was one of the only 2 people in the history of medicine with such a machine (the first man - an American - survived 12 days).

So when they say "without a pulse" does the machine just steadily cycle his blood and not pump it in "pulses"?

When I originally saw the title of the thread, I thought "no ****".

Pretty amazing they were able to keep him alive that long with no heart.

Pretty much. The following picture gallery describes how it worked (especially pictures 6-13). The biggest challenge is apparently to fine tune the pressures in both valves. The (relative) success of the procedure was aided by the fact that the patient was a healthy, well-trained firefighter before his heart problems started.
