I dislocated my jaw.... :o(

Mine didn't fully lock in place like this guy's in the video, but this is the only fix when it happens. They pump you up with a drug so you're totally disoriented because of the amount of pain you are about to be in and physically snap your jaw back into position. O.M.G..

So what happened? I was eating a Powerbar. It was cold and it's chewy so I was kinda fighting it. I opened my mouth wide at one point and I felt one (joint) bone get on top of the other at the right end of jaw right under the ear. I felt like it was getting stuck, so I quickly moved my jaw sideways and bit down. Heard a loud snapping sound like a bone broke (didn't). Pain and numbness for a while. Went away shortly, but over the next few days I'd wake up with my bite being off to the side and seeing my jaw crooked in the mirror. Popping and grinding noises (bone on bone) when moving the jaw around. Unable to open mouth fully without something physically preventing it. Soreness from right side, to the botton, all the way to the left side of the entire jaw.

It can happen to anyone at any time. You may yawn too wide. Eat. Laugh. And out it goes. I have a mouthgard now and hopefully it will be enough. If it snaps back out again over the next few weeks, I may have to get my jaw wired for about a month and a half. Hopefully, I won't need surgery.

I am not a happy person right now.

I'm not buying the Powerbar story....

I caught a slapshot in the face back in March and while my jaw was not broken the little bone that runs between your ear and cheekbone was crushed in. Couldn't close my mouth for 14 days til surgery. It is very annoying not being able to eat solid foods. My jaw wasn't wired shut, but was in effect wired open.

For now, I was instructed to not open my mouth much. East soft foods, soups, no hard or extended chewing. Keep my mouth closed as much as I can. Wear the guard throughout the day and especially while sleeping for protection. Hopefully, things will strengthen inside and this could be the end of it.

Yeah, mine was relatively minor surgery. They slit your temple (7 staples), wiggle a fancy screwdriver down behind that bone and wiggle it around until it seems good.

That is the exact way the Surgeon explained it, which of course made me like him all the more. He did mention the chance of permanent facial paralysis, although that chance was very small....

I was eating Salmon in the recovery room, so hungry at that time.
