Pretty drastic step... Although I know lower Manhattan (The Wall St. area), floods VERY VERY easily.

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/a ... es/264198/

Ryan Maue, who runs a weather modeling firm, put out this animated GIF of the storm's approach yesterday. "This is unprecedented --absolutely stunning upper-level configuration pinwheeling #Sandy on-shore like ping-pong ball," he tweeted. It shows how cold air to the north and west of the storm spin Sandy into the mid-atlantic coastline. (Nota bene: his models also show very high winds at skyscraper altitudes.)

JS© note: Maue's tweets made a comment about 100 mph winds at skyscraper levels.

"According to the latest storm surge forecast for NYC from NHC, Sandy's storm surge is expected to be several feet higher than Irene's. If the peak surge arrives near Monday evening's high tide at 9 pm EDT, a portion of New York City's subway system could flood, resulting in billions of dollars in damage," Masters concluded. "I give a 50% chance that Sandy's storm surge will end up flooding a portion of the New York City subway system."

Is errybody ready? Short of boarding up the windows, I think we are.

I've never been easily unnerved by weather forecasts, but I'm really starting to get nervous here.

I suppose I should crank out some work now in prep for losing power later, but I can't concentrate at all.

Working from home tomorrow and likely Tuesday. As ready as we are going to be. Western PA is getting a bit of a break on the wind aspect of it, but the wind is still going to be extraordinarily strong. Southeastern PA and northern Delaware are looking like ground zero for the worst of the rain. It is pouring already, has been for several hours.

I highly recommend this site (National Hurricane Center) for the most up to date information and maps:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at3+shtml/180855.shtml?5-daynl

The first map indicates the probability (in percentages) that at any given point during this storm, the surface winds will average 39 mph or greater over a one minute span (essentially, sustained winds). We are already at near 100% here in SE PA. There is another map that does the same probability for 58 mph or greater...we are at 70%.

We've never experienced anything like this. With bad thunderstorms, the wind can be bad but it is generally over after 15 to 20 minutes. This is going to be extreme, sustained wind that goes on for hours. Combine that with the leafed trees and the pouring rain, the devastation is going to be unimaginable. I've followed weather for a long time, and the hype should be believed with this.

My aunt is in Jersey in Bayville (North CentralJersey) and about 3 blocks from the Bay. The water levels were high and rising there. One block past the bay was already under water.
