governor says to stock up with three days of supplies

Gov. Tom Corbett declared a disaster emergency, residents were told to stock their homes with enough batteries, water and food for three days in light of the monstrous, slow-moving mayhem predicted to strike the mid-Atlantic early next week.
The brewing weather system involving Hurricane Sandy is expected to pummel the East Coast harder than Hurricane Irene, which last year left hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians without power and eventually led to historic flooding.
In Philadelphia, the mayor told residents of flood-prone neighborhoods to make plans to stay with family or friends and to be packed and ready to leave by Sunday afternoon. Rain is predicted to begin falling in the city Sunday evening, he said, with the heaviest downpours starting Monday night.

Is this actually supposed to get bad here in Pittsburgh? Outside of 3-6 inches of rain, should we really expect to be having 72 hours of food provisions?

i've watched enough survivorman to survive 3 days with what's in my stomach right now. worst case scenario i can just find a bone and hold it in the air and hope a meaty bird swoops down to peck at it.

winds are supposed to be 40-60mph, with the worst of it showing up Monday night and tapering off Wednesday AM.

I've probably done less than most.

Grill moved inside? Check
Case of water? Will have in an hour or so
Food that doesn't require cooking in case of a power loss (thumbs down to an electric stove)? See above

you're going to use your grill inside?

if you plan on riding the worst of it out in your house with a bottle of rum, i'd suggest two cases of water.

I have 5 gallons of water in the fridge already but if the power goes out, almost all my food requires cool storage. I don't need to cook any of my food though.

I have no candles or flashlights though. Think I'll need those? Mt. Lebanon almost never loses power.

My Stove is gas though. But doesn't the gas lines shut down if there is no power?

This should be interesting. DC is supposed to get pretty hammered by Sandy. We're basically right in the direct path of the latest projection. I'm hoping for minimal damage, but a lot of power outages, especially in the region of my work offices...

well, i did it with astonishingly little precision, but i threw a ton of caulk on the flashing on my roof...that better do something. i don't see how a leaky ceiling could be good for me right now.

LOL, no. I don't want it blowing over. Had it happen once before at my old house, where a storm knocked it over. Grill was never the same afterwards and eventually got rid of it.

The grill itself was in the corner of my patio and the likelihood of it blowing over was minimal, but I'd rather not take that chance.

nah, the "see above" was more directed to the comment above that said I should have it in an hour or so. That statement is actually untrue since I haven't left my place yet.

I like our 'burb a lot--great neighborhoods, great logistical location, lovely area, I love my job and where I work--so I concur with shaf and shmenguin on that point. But, if I left tomorrow, I wouldn't miss it, probably because I've never taken to Philadelphia itself.

Despite understanding the rationale, I'm still ticked that Southwest has killed the PHL-PIT flight.. Oh, and I can't stand Philly sports.

Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damages.

I always think its funny when meteorologists start estimating storm damage. If their margin of error is consistent, its just as likely to cause no damage.

Your gas line won't go out with the electricity. But if your stove has an electric ignighter, you're gonna need matches or one of those butane ignighters, like ones you might use for candles or fireplaces.
