Best day to visit Pittsburgh?

Even though I live 1 1/2 from Pittsburgh, I rarely go there. I want to visit the city soon to take some photos. Just some general sightseeing type of things, not really "visiting" anywhere. I'd like to go on a day when there won't be crazy traffic. Is there any certain day of the week that would be best?

I'm assuming that you're talking about downtown and the city neigborhoods right? The suburban areas are a nightmare on saturday and sunday, but you can get around the city easily.

I'm actually going to be taking photos of some locations used in movie productions. I'm working on addresses now, but it looks like I'll mostly be in Oakland, Carnegie, Penn Hills, Sewickley. I think that's pretty much everywhere.

Well, if you are going to Sewickley and Carnegie then pretty much any weekend will be fine.

What are some locations there were movie productions around those areas? JW. Maybe head up to Evans City and check the Night of the Living Dead cemetery.

Mac - I've been to Evans City, it's very cool. Looks the same as NOTLD.

The places I'm checking out were used in Silence of the Lambs, Creepshow, Monkey Shines, Mothman Prophecies and Sorority Row.

oh cool, I can recommend Silence of the Lambs, its right down the road from me in Layton PA. I was going to mention that but since you said closer to PGH I figured that wasnt what you were talking about.

Dunno if you are aware but buffalo bill's house is at 40.090399,-79.721984 in google maps. There is an old couple that lives in the house. They may even let you take some sweet pictures inside, they are very nice people.

Kenny - Thanks! I should add that I'm doing this for a book I'm writing, a horror-themed travelogue. I've done these weird road trips for the past few years and thought that it might make a cool book. I started writing it last year. This year, I began pitching it to publishers and got a book deal over the summer. Ironically, most of the places I've visited are away from western PA. I have places in Maine, Massachusetts, Jersey, NY, and as far south as Georgia/South Carolina. The book also covers supposedly haunted places, graves, etc.

Some of the places I've been include spots from:

I know the famous Silence of the Lambs scene was shot at Soldiers and Sailors Museum/Memorial in Oakland. That doubled at the courthouse that Lector was being held at. I've been into the room his "cage" was in twice for different things. I think another shot was of the Music Hall at the Carnegie Museum.

I feel like I remember Mothman being shot in Kittanning while I was in high school.

I think they completely redid the town but Super 8 was shot predominately in Weirton WV.

Canaan - The mental hospital was in Danvers, MA. Most of it was torn down but the center of the Kirkbride was restored and turned into an apartment complex. It's still very recognizable from the film. Gordon's house is in Malden, MA, if memory serves.
