Larry Hagman, the North Texas native who played the conniving and mischievous J.R. Ewing on the TV show Dallas, died Friday at a Dallas hospital. He was 81.

Mr. Hagman died at 4:20 p.m. Friday at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications of his recent battle with cancer, members of his family said.

“Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most,” the family said in a statement. “Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”

Aww. To the heavens, Major Nelson.

"Jeannie! You come out of there! Right now!"

I had such a crush on him when he was in "I Dream of Jeannie." (I always wanted a bedroom like Jeannie's bottle, too.)

I rarely missed an episode of "Dallas."

I never watched the show so I didn't know much about him. I just read up on him. Man did he live the party life? drinking, drugs etc. He said he's been drinking 4 bottles of champagne a day for years, most recently on the new Dallas show! wow....

Me too. I don't think I ever watched an episode of Dallas. RIP, Larry.

He actually quit drinking in the 90s after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver which eventually lead to liver cancer. Drinking as hard as he did caught up big time.

He had a liver transplant which saved him. For a while. He died from complications related to throat cancer.

I wasn't a big Jeannie fan. Didn't pay much attention to him until Dallas. And he was perfect as J.R. He understood how to be a soap opera villain and be liked at the same time.

that's pretty remarkable how long the liver can usually hold out. You figure, since he was in his early 60s, he had been hard drinking for 40 years.
