The passenger is just as responsible for getting into the vehicle with a drunk driver.

So, does Bob Costas make a speech about not drinking and driving this week?

Call a cab. This doesn't happen. Stupidity on both their parts.

It's amazing to me that NFL players, even those on the practice squad who still multiple times more than the average Joe who reads LGP, won't call a cab.

Wouldn't isolate that to just NFL players. Young people are stupid across all income levels.

I followed the story a bit on Sunday's coverage, and they mentioned that it was Josh Brent's 2nd DUI. He was charged with one while in college, where he and Jerry Brown were teammates as well. Senseless.

This is why the Steelers/NFL as well as local law enforcement should throw the book at players like Ta'au when they do something as stupid but just happen to not kill anyone.

I get your point, and you're right. But practice squad players only get $5,000 or $6,000 a week and not all play the full 17 weeks of the regular season.

Just parsing things a bit, I know. But they aren't exactly sitting on huge piles of loot.

Right? The team ultimately notified about what happened while on the tarmac. So the idea that a starting d-lineman was out boozing it up with a guy from the scout team just a few hours prior to that is, well...... I was going to say 'surprising', but then I suppose that it shouldn't be a surprise that someone who gets done for DUI twice in the span of a few years was eager to get liquored up a few hours before a team charter.

I'm so sick of this. Like older people never made a mistake in their lives and are genetically superior to all us under 30 folk who have no respect or regard for authority. Give me a break.

Older people have made a lot of mistakes. That's why, provided they learnt from their mistakes (not a given at all) they're not necessarily superior, but they generally mess up a little less often.

Older people are - on average - less likely to make stupid mistakes.
Is that really up for debate?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/11/chilling-eyewitness-account-says-josh-brent-initially-reluctant-to-tend-to-jerry-brown/related/

McWilliams arrived seeing Brent in the street and didn’t realize there was another passenger still in the car. McWilliams then described hearing Brown call out from the vehicle for help with Brent allegedly unwilling to tend to his friend and teammate.

“Josh looked at me and he said ‘(Brown) won’t get out of the car,’” McWilliams said. “And I said ‘well you can’t just leave him in there and let him die, you’ve got to help him. Go get him.’ I commanded him several times and Josh looked at me again and he said ‘he won’t get out of the car’ and I told him ‘you can’t stand here and watch him die. You’ve got to get him out.’ He still didn’t move so I thought he wasn’t going to help at all.”

McWilliams said as she returned to her car to retrieve her cell phone, Brent finally did tend to Brown and pulled him from the burning wreckage.

“I want people to understand that Josh Brent is not a hero,” McWilliams said. “I keep hearing reports of how he was there to pull his friend from the fire but he had to be coerced and pushed and begged and pleaded to get his friend out of the fire and when he pulled him out, he just left him in the street. He didn’t tell him ‘hang in there, help is on the way.’ Nothing. He just left him there and I want the magnitude of that to be understood.”

Those comments seem pretty distasteful right now. Shocking, but also in bad taste.
