It sucks that humans break and it's worse that some are beyond help... The whole thing is a tragedy, very sad.

True. A bullet can make for an effective lockpick.

The thought that there's really nothing that could have stopped this is even more sickening. I understand that people close to him, and people that knew him could have seen warning signs and gotten him help, but I'm talking about the school itself. They were helpless in this situation and that in itself is scary.

As a current one, I've been thinking that as well. From all reports, the school here was in lock down. Unfortunately, apart from having armed guards in schools at all times, there isn't much more you can do.

Exactly. Any highly populated place has the same problem. If some nutcase decides to come in with guns, the only thing you can do is try to minimize the damage he does as much as possible. I can't fathom what it must have been like there today.

From the AP:

Did I miss this, it was buried in a story.

"A second suspect has been taken into police custody in Hoboken, New Jersey, CBS News reported. A law enforcement official told the Associated Press the person taken into custody is Lanza’s younger brother"

Like others have said, words cannot express my absolute sorrow for this; and frankly, immense disappointment with the evil that clearly exists. My wife and I went to our first parent teacher conference today, prior to this news breaking nationally. The kids at our local elementary school were being released early and waiting for the buses. Kids being kids around this time of year, they were all signing Christmas songs, the girls holding hands with each other, the boys roughhousing a little; all with smiles on their faces, all, literally giddy and overcome with excitement of the season. The teachers were commenting on the excitement in the air around the holiday break. Kindergartners and their innocence, their joy for life, in their natural environment of home and play; you would hope would be enough to overcome even the most evil intentions of some of the worst humans. But sadly, and tragically, not.

After the conference, my wife and I get in the van, turn on the radio, and unfortunalty listen to the worst of humanity.

20 dead children
6 dead adults
1 dead shooter
Shooter's mother dead in CT
Shooter's father dead in NJ
Brother of shooter in custody in NJ
Still uncertain which of the brothers is deceased and which is in custody in NJ.

Stop the madness. The public doesn't need to know the details of these rampages.

Blackout the shooters name, and the details surrounding the event. Mourn the victims.

I know a similar post was made in regards to the mall shooting earlier this week and it turned out to be fake, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I would t be so quick to dismiss any of that. The teen that shot up the mall in Minn. did the same thing. Some people aren't able to discern that all of 4chan is not to be taken seriously but that speaks to deeper problems with the individual.

Fox News now saying:

Adam is the shooter; Ryan is alive.
Mother is definitely dead in CT.
Father may actually be alive, but someone is dead at the Lanza house in Hoboken, NJ.
The guns used in the shooting seem to have belonged to the mother.
The girlfriend of Ryan Lanza might be missing.
Adam Lanza may have been mentally or developmentally disabled.

Wolf Blitzer just said that we "are sensitive to the kids during a tragedy like this"

No Wolf, no you're not. You want to be sensitive, how about giving these kids some room and stop shoving a camera and microphone in their face?

The kids who faced an incredibly traumatic event at a young age and will likely be effected by this for the rest of their lives? Those kids? Or the ones who were tragically killed by a madman? Yeah. Much too sensitive to them.

Yes, the kids that in some cases will probably be afraid to set foot in a school because of today. You don't think the kids who no longer have friends because of this tragedy aren't changed?

Right, that was much too sensitive. I apologize.

Unfortunately people seem not to get that.

I'll see college aged girls out running alone at 11 at night and think "Are you insane?"

Good Heavens, let's not develop this mindset. Convincing yourself that you're in danger all the time is the worst thing to do.

Who said anything about constant danger? That's not it. But convincing yourself that any particular place is 100% safe is also a lie.

As I said on facebook, my job is advocating for the safety of young children. I have seen some absolutely numbing things in the 6 months that I've been at this job. I can't even comprehend this. I just don't want to believe its real.
