Our local news played a clip of these scumbag MSNBC reports with a mic shoved in a kids face and the kid was describing what he heard. Turned my stomach. Out of this kids mouth was the phrases "The police came in and they all had machine guns" and "One of the teachers died"

I almost had to chance the channel I couldnt have stood there with a camera listening to this kid say it

/Rant at the shooter

Why couldn't you have taken a bottle of pills, washed it down with a fifth of vodka, and gone to sleep? Not dramatic enough. Swallowed bleach? No crashing and fire. Driven your car off of a remote cliff? Blown up your own house? There was blaze of glory potential there!

But, wait: We get it. No one who made you feel like the world would be better off without you could ever suffer enough. Someone has to "pay for" all of the wrongs the world has committed against you. Cameras will show the world how you took control and "showed everyone." Reporters will write your name in the annals of history. Dude, you've been, like, trending on Twitter all day--"respeck"?

You had to rip out and shred the hearts of almost 30 families, the innocence out of hundreds of children, the soul out of a community, and the any ideal of prevailing goodness out of a nation. You got your blaze of glory in the hellfire you'll be tormented with for all of eternity. I'm pissed off that you're going to get what you wanted out of all this. But you also proved that everyone who you perceived persecuted you all your life might have been really onto something. Because the world is better off without you.

You didn't have the right to take the world away from so many other people.

/End rant

Maybe you can can tell I'm sick and furious. And frankly, I'm sick and furious at being sick and furious more and more frequently.

All I can do is pray. Thanks for letting me vent, guys.

The media is also part of Dish's problem. We hear about these things and suddenly we devote an entire day (sometimes more) to talking about the event and the shooter. Don't give them the recognition. Report the facts. Children are dead. Unless the gunman is on the loose, no one cares about him. Stop making a big deal about his personal life. We don't even need to see his picture. Giving them the recognition gives other mentally ill individuals reinforcement for it. "Hey, I could be famous!"

No. Stop giving the shooter(s) recognition.

And, like I mentioned earlier, don't make it political.

I've read a good bit about it today, but the TV has been off all day. I couldn't bear to turn it on.

I apologize for my rant. I think I went over the top. Now it's too late to delete.  :face: <--grief

I had no idea about Stephen King's book and the connection to that 1996 shooting. I'm having a hard time remembering that event, however.

It's rare to see a female let loose here... if not today; when. Me, I go back to the Amish schoolhouse shooting. Very sad. Young girls as innocent as all, but they ready to die to try save the others.
I am going to step back from the television tonight.

I remember the Amish schoolhouse shooting. I was struck by how those families who had lost their children stressed to others to love and forgive the shooter. I think some even attended a funeral for him. I can only dream of being as pure of heart and as compassionate in that particular situation.

Just found out I have a bit of a remote connection to this tragic event.

The last few years I've spent part of my winter in Key West. One of the couples I've made pretty good friends with come down from CT every winter and stay a few doors from the condo I rent.

It turns out they're from Newtown. They also have Grandkids that are exactly in this age category.

I believe that their Grandkids attend parochial school so they wouldn't have been at Sandy Hook, but I don't know for sure.

I don't want to call them and ask, it seems to crass, so I'm waiting for the names to be released and praying that I don't recognize any as being my friends Grandkids.

This sucks.

Just to be clear, I'm not attributing all blame to the media. I'm not even sure "blame" is the right word. The issue is too complex, as are many of our most serious societal issues. I was careful to omit my personal feelings on gun control, as I don't wish to share them in this forum.

Yes, I'm concerned about the media as agent for every sociopathic or self-destructive individual to air their grievances publicly. No, the media's desire to tap into our human morbid curiosity and our need to emotionally invest in the melodrama is not new. But I perceive an increasing lack of discernment, respect, and care. BTW, I can't grasp having no compunction at all about shoving a mike in a terrified 8-year-old's face.

Why is the media being discussed here at all? If you don't want to see the coverage then don't watch. This is a story about the crazed individual and easy availability of guns that allowed so many to be killed so quickly. Yes, even if there were no guns available he could have used a kitchen knife or blown up the school using fertilizer ala Oklahoma City but anyone that doesn't see the easy availability of guns as being a problem is just kidding themselves.

The media is being discussed because I enjoy watching the evening news and finding out what happened around the nation that day. This story is going to run and be the only thing national news reports on for the next week, which only makes other crazies out there say, "hey, they talked about this dude for weeks, imagine what I could do..."

As far as the gun thing is concerned, just stop. This is not a gun control issue. Marijuana is illegal, doesn't mean I can't go get some. Prostitution is illegal, doesn't mean I can't go get some. Kiddie porn is illegal, doesn't mean I can't go get some. By making guns illegal you do nothing for the availability of guns, it'll still be just as easy to go and get a gun. Also, this happened in a rural area. If it's anything like the rural area where I grew up, everyone has guns for hunting. Should we outlaw those? This is a freak incident that occurred and a lot of people's knee jerk reaction is "Well, we make guns illegal, this will never happen." Yeah...dream on.

Just some facts behind the current laws in CT:

CT has a pistol permit program which requires training and background checks before you can buy a pistol and then you need to register with the state. The regulations behind this are among the highest in the country.

There is a 2 week wait on rifles unless you have a hunting license or a pistol permit.

You need to be 21 to buy a pistol

CT still has almost all of the federal AWB in place except for magazine restrictions.

CT has storage laws but only if a minor is in the house

Media and entertainment is a direct function of the people, news wouldn't be obnoxious if that's not what we wanted and what we watched. I see a narrative developing that's expressing more irritation at the news and media as a result of this. That's as misguided as a blanket statement about gun laws.
