Yeah, I never said that's what I do. I should have explained more in my original post. If I'm at Taco Bell or McDonalds, I'll usually just grab a bunch. I dont really calculate how much I'll need. In general, I take caution and probably take more than I know I'll use. This is becuase I'd rather take a couple extra, as opposed to running out. This is stealing?

Not stealing. That's a tacit understanding between the customer and store. They set those packets out knowing you're going to take more than you need so you don't run out.

Taking more than you need so you can stockpile them for later would be different. That's stealing. It's not a big deal and no one really cares, but it's stealing.

What about plastic cutlery thats sitting out? I've often taken cutlery for to go orders with the intent of using it at home so its less dishes for me, but end up using my own silverware and just storing the plastic cutlery to take with my lunch to the office. Cutlery.

The cafe in my building has plastic silverware by the registers. People used to load up on the stuff after purchasing their food. They also used to take as many condiment packets as possible. As well as salt/pepper

About 6 months ago, the cafe hung a sign that said if anyone took more silverware than needed, to please pay 5 cents for each item. They also switched from packets of condiments to dispensers, with little plastic cups (with no lids). Salt and pepper in shakers only.

That cut down on the hoarding for a while. But while no one takes mass quantities of condiments anymore, the silverware hoarding is back. People are just far more sneakier when taking it.

As someone else said above it's all about intent and I will add that value has nothing to do with it. Plastic or metal, if you purposely take "silverware" with the intent to use it later on then that is stealing.

I think that's the bigger question here. Sure, literally it's theft, but is it wrong? I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with it.
