Are you using all of those packets in the Taco Bell order that you are going to be eating on that very occasion? If not, yes, that is stealing. Every one of those packets should be consumed in that sitting

Every single person in the entire world has accidently taken a few too many packets in their lives.

There's a difference between accidentally picking a few extras and "I'm just gonna grab a handful, I'll use them on other stuff"

Yeah, I never said that's what I do. I should have explained more in my original post. If I'm at Taco Bell or McDonalds, I'll usually just grab a bunch. I dont really calculate how much I'll need. In general, I take caution and probably take more than I know I'll use. This is becuase I'd rather take a couple extra, as opposed to running out. This is stealing?

Its all about intent and acting like a grown up, people.

When you have a bottle of katchup, its meant to stay in the store.

When you have a packet, it is intended to be mobile.

Not stealing. That's a tacit understanding between the customer and store. They set those packets out knowing you're going to take more than you need so you don't run out.

Taking more than you need so you can stockpile them for later would be different. That's stealing. It's not a big deal and no one really cares, but it's stealing.

Is it any coincidence that people are now stealing condiments clean out of dining establishments after Obummercare starts to take effect? Free stuff for everyone apparently...THIS COUNTRY IS SCREWED

Pint glasses with a beer logo are often given to drinking establishments free of charge. Can I take one of them?

No, because the beer company gave the establishment their pint glasses so that when people order drinks, they will see that beer name on the glass and enhance their product advertisement.

Yeah, that's theft. It doesn't matter how the drinking establishment got the pint glass. And more often than not they aren't given to the establishments for free.

lol, the rationalization is hilarious. What if I win a free Mario Lemieux signed puck? If someone is visiting my house and takes it without asking, is it stealing since I didn't pay anything for it?

If that puck is in a packet then yes I can take it. Where do you live exactly?

What about plastic cutlery thats sitting out? I've often taken cutlery for to go orders with the intent of using it at home so its less dishes for me, but end up using my own silverware and just storing the plastic cutlery to take with my lunch to the office. Cutlery.

This isn't too hard. If you're going in a picnic and you stop by panera for cutlery, napkins, and condiments you are stealing.

Along these same lines...

The cafe in my building has plastic silverware by the registers. People used to load up on the stuff after purchasing their food. They also used to take as many condiment packets as possible. As well as salt/pepper

About 6 months ago, the cafe hung a sign that said if anyone took more silverware than needed, to please pay 5 cents for each item. They also switched from packets of condiments to dispensers, with little plastic cups (with no lids). Salt and pepper in shakers only.

That cut down on the hoarding for a while. But while no one takes mass quantities of condiments anymore, the silverware hoarding is back. People are just far more sneakier when taking it.

So you just offered me a larger, better vessel to steal salt and pepper in? Nice.

As someone else said above it's all about intent and I will add that value has nothing to do with it. Plastic or metal, if you purposely take "silverware" with the intent to use it later on then that is stealing.

I think that's the bigger question here. Sure, literally it's theft, but is it wrong? I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with it.
