The Qaher 313

Unveiling the Qaher F313 (Dominant F313) earlier this month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad described it as "among the most advanced fighter jets in the world" with features including the ability to evade detection by radar and hit both ground and air targets.

Aviation experts have questioned whether the jet shown can even fly as it was too small to accommodate a real pilot and the controls and wiring looked too simple. It also lacked the bolts and rivets found on all aircraft and offered wonky aerodynamics.

I think the thing at the top of the instrument stack is an Alpine car radio.


On the one hand, it looks like a 60% scale model; the ejection seat doesn't even come up to the pilot's head. But even if it's a scale, taken at full size there'd be no way the pilot could reach the instrument panel when strapped in.

I worked at Northrop-Grumman for a few months (doing something non-aviation related).

Which is fine. Mock up aircraft usually are made of materials like that. I've seen a real F-35 and the fiberglass mockup at the same airshow on consecutive years, and visually there's near as no difference between them.

That's the point; the mock up is still - dimensionally, at least - a life-sized aircraft. This Iranian thing looks like a really big R/C model, or a model you'd build for a movie to stuff with explosives and destroy on camera. It's completely ridiculous.
