That has pirates mid game reliever written all over it

Hurdle's going to turn to him in the 8th inning of a 1-run game in August when the Pirates absolutely need to win. I am getting mad just thinking about it.

Are you going with "Dirty Sanchez" once he makes the big club, Rocco?

Mid Game reliever? Sounds like we found our 5th starter

He'll probably be an adequate 5 starter. It is the NL Central afterall.

McDonald went 4 innings and gave up 1 hit. That's good. He walked 3. That's not so good.

Speaking of not good, Jeanmar Gomez: 1 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs, none earned thanks to a throwing error by Gaby Sanchez at 3B. Even with the error Gomez has seen 4 runs scored in all 3 of his outings and has a WHIP of 2.50. It's spring and it all may be meaningless, but it feels like the Pirates are better off if they'd stop trying to make fetch happen here and give up the dream on Gomez.

its such a pirate move to get gabby sanchez at bats at third.

of course, it also makes no sense.

logic dictates he would spell el blimpo when a good lefty is pitching

however, if gaby sanchez is playing third, that means the pirates other power hitting left hander that cant hit lefties, GFJ, has to play.

so whats the point of sanchez playing third?

I'm guessing they're just trying it in the spring to see if he can handle the position. If he can do it, it's one less reason to keep Josh Harrison on the roster.

That was my thought. It was more about having a backup option other than Harrison. It'd be nice to have our backup middle infielder be able to actually field... Gaby playing 3rd allows us to not have to have that Ciriaco/Mercer waste of roster space.

Theoretically. But this is Clint Hurdle we're talking about

Jason Grilli got the save for Team Italy in the WBC against Mexico. He loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a HBP before getting a groundout to end the game. Remind me to buy more antacids before the season starts.

in this gentleman's opinion, hurdle loves having ciraccococo/mercer types wasting that 25th roster spot.

It's not just Hurdle. Seemingly every manager has a fetish for scrappy middle infielders who can marginally play 4-5 positions but can't really hit.

Rocco we can see right through your bucco apologist opinions at this point. No point in making up things to defend them and clint hurdle.

Please enjoy Gazzetta, a major Italian newspaper, leading its recap of the Italy-Mexico game with this:

There are games that you can not forget. No more. This debut in the World Classic - the new World With The Stars - against Mexico's Adrian Gonzalez and Sergio Romo, two stars of the Major League, enters in the history of baseball blue: as it is acquired, for the like Italy 'won it (but could also lose it), for as the players took turns, all indeed all (including coach and led by Marco Mazzieri, which has among his assistants people like Mike Piazza and Frank Catalanotto). A victory over the wire 6-5, last out, last bouncy before freeing the joy, all the mountain with Jason Grilli, author of salvation, as good as the winning pitcher Nick Pugliese, who plays in Italy and not in Major, as good as Alex Liddi, who arrived in base 5 times of 5 and author in the first inning of the second point beat Italy.

2. Pick-off throw into the stands
3. Wild pitch
4. Wild pitch. Run.

Are the posts on the last few pages made tongue-in-cheek? You can't take the slightest bit of meaning out of spring training.

Mine were. I don't even remember the guy's name who was pitching.

Case in point: Royals are like 12-1 and Reds are 2-12
