Funny thing about those caught stealings all 5 were with pitchers who weren't here last year (for the most part).. Sanchez has been out there for 2, Wilson for 2 and Locke for 1. Wilson and Locke threw some innings last year but not many. Barajas certainly had his hand in allowing a ton of steals but the staff sucked in controlling runners, there were times that no catcher would've had any chance.

Mr. Colby wrote:Troy man what's up?

Bullpen "hasn't missed a beat with the addition of Melancon" yet "we traded Hanrahan for scrubs"... wasn't that the main piece of the trade?

You didn't care much for the lineup yesterday... we went with the righty lineup, only questionable decision was sitting Alvarez as he's heating up but I can understand not wanting him to get thrown off by a lefty who has been lights out this year. Most teams would sit most if not all of their leftys in that situation...

One minute you're complaining Pimentel is in his 3rd year of AA, the next you're saying his AA sample size is too small to deduce anything?

I don't think anyone is going to argue that the trade hasn't worked in hindsight because Melancon is effective and Hanrahan has been hurt, and when not hurt he has sucked. Hanrahan is an all star closer, the return is essentially a younger guy who has question marks after being terrible last year, maybe NH knew that he just needed to get out of Boston, but do you really trust that? Sands and Dejesus are clearly 4A fodder and I'm not ready to annoint Pimentel as anything yet aside from a throw in. I'm saying that Pimentel is repeating AA and that his early season success is a small sample size....i'm not sure where that got lost in translation.

The reason I didn't like the lineup is because I don't want Alvarez and Snider being treated as platoon players. I'm ok with getting Sanchez in for Jones on occasion, but you can you tell me that benching Snider and Alvarez to get McKenry and Tabata's bats into the lineup is a recipe for success?

I'm very happy with Travis Snider hitting unlimited doubles. I can also deal with Martin slacking at the bat if he's going to throw our a runner per game on average.

As of right now, the Pirates win 81.3 games in their simulations and get to the playoffs 27% of the time. That's about as much as you can ask for of a team with Jonathan Sanchez in their rotation.

Snider and Marte's growth (at least so far) this season has been fantastic. If Russell Martin can keep rounding back to his older form (and he's already throwing people out), the offense could be a decent force to be reckoned with.

It's tough to embrace teams whose head coach/manager likes to huff paint fumes during the game.

Pirates v. LHP: .168/.255/.255
Pirates v. RHP: .252/.322/.391

Walker this year against LHP is batting .125. Against RHP he's hitting .313. (This is part of why Hurdle butchered the 7th inning yesterday when he had a chance to make Fredi lift Avilan; Hurdle blew it, of course, because Hurdle is unable to see more than 3 inches ahead of him.) Part of that is the Pirates haven't faced many lefty starters since the first week, but the team has a definite left-handed slant right now. We know Jones can't hit lefties and shouldn't face them. El Blimpo has enough power to make him a threat against lefties, and there aren't a lot of other options. I'd like to see Snider get a chance against LHP before relegating him to permanent platoon status, especially since Tabata appears to be content to be a 4th OF. If Basura Caliente can keep his .946 OPS against LHP that will help.

I'm not convinced Alvarez can't hit lefties, when he's lost at the plate he looks equally terrible against righties and lefties, and when he's on he hits everything.

I'l like to see Snider get all the at bats at this point until he proves otherwise. Tabata is at the point where he's just not going to make the next adjustment in reaction to pitchers taking away the opposite field from him.
