They suck, but these are pretty normal times for divisional series games. Same way every year.

Pirates' X factor: Pedro Alvarez

When you look at Alvarez in sum, you see a flawed player who makes the most of his best tool: power. He doesn't walk enough, he struck out fifth-most in baseball, he doesn't really help on the basepaths and his defense is inconsistent. But he was tied with Goldschmidt for the most home runs in the National League this year, and he obviously has great power.

Alvarez's wRC+ of 111 means he was 11 percent better than league average with the stick, but it also means he needs to flex that muscle to be valuable. His monthly output swung from 50 percent worse than league average in April -- when he hit four homers all month -- to 94 percent better than league average in June, when he hit 10 home runs. The Pirates have more team power than the Cardinals, but those seasonal power numbers include "Good Pedro." If "Bad Pedro" shows up, one of the Pirates' strengths may be weakened.

I thought maybe there might be an advantage with the first two games being in the day, but the DayDro spilts from last year have reversed. Assuming the Cards do everything they can to avoid pitching to Cutch and Morneau continues to show zero power, Byrd and Pedro need to keep slugging.

I made plans for Sunday morning/early afternoon and would like to know sooner rather than later if I have to cancel them. Thanks a lot, MLB.

Seriously watched the same highlights like 5 times today. Can't get over how great last night was. I don't know if that atmosphere can ever be repeated but i hope it comes close the rest of October.

TBD could probably strike out Pedro twice. In all seriousness, I'd bet every dollar FC has it's Wacha assuming the Cards can win a game and take it to Game 4. (Brief aside- Shelby Miller and Wacha are both 22, meaning the Pirates will see them both for a while. Kelly is 25. I hate the Cards and their ability to always have good young players.) I'm also glad Kelly is facing Liriano- Liriano has owned the Cards far more than Kelly's owned the Pirates this season. Were I Matheny I'd try to use Wainwright and Kelly to win the first two games, then sacrifice Lynn in Game 3 and just assume a 4 game series. I'd want Kelly pitching early in the series so I'd have the option of using him in Game 5 if Wainwright struggles in his start. There's a day off between Games 4 and 5 so the #2 starter could take that game on full rest.

For the Pirates, things are simpler. I'll be interested to see how many pitchers the Pirates have on the roster. Hopefully they go with 10 or 11 pitchers and instead take more hitters. They have a lineup full of guys with platoon splits and a bullpen full of guys who don't have platoon splits. Between Wilson, MATW, Melancon, Grilli, Mazzaro and Gomez do you really need another arm?

I still continue to worry about Melancon, the dude just doesn't have it lately. Any chance Hurdle uses Watson for setup as opposed to Melancon?

Unreal season unreal atmosphere unreal moment cueto ball drop Martin next pitch HR. Blessed to be there exercising the tops of my lungs. I couldn't tell if it was the crowds confidence or the teams confidence but i had a stiff confidence the D would handle every ball in play. I've never been happier to see Barmes on the field. Best part of the crowd - what made it feel unique - was its relentlessness. I've been to other hyped sporting events where an energy and atmosphere can give a team a lead. But 21 years of built up Will gave this team a win. A no doubter. There was no let up and no ok we're sitting pretty now. I've never cheered louder for the end of a seventh inning. Never shouted so urgently for every precious run to be tacked on. So proud to be part of that crowd. Reds had no chance. It felt inevitable. It made my baseball life. Reds had no chance.

He did last night so there's hope (even if Watson did give up a homer)

• In the 19 games the two teams played this season, the Pirates hit 19 homers and the Cardinals just five.

That's all I got.

Have to try and get to Wainwright early and often today. If they can score 3 runs through six, I'll be ecstatic.

This run by the Bucs has definitely tempered my anticipation of both the Steelers and Pens new seasons.

I'm thinking the Steelers could be playing for a top-five draft choice and I don't expect much more than an early postseason exit from the Pens again. Winter is coming and I think it might be a long one.

I'm pretty sure in the local Pittsburgh market, ROOT or someone will carry the MLB feed.

MLB Network has exclusive rights to the game and there will be no coverage of the game on a local channel. Bush league move.

I wonder how many people will go to the Pirates viewing party first, and then straggle in to the Pens game afterwards? I think when the puck drops, there may be a number of empty seats.
