Will Burnett retire? #Pirates GM" I'll let AJ talk for himself on that." Thing is, Burnett's not returning calls.

No qualifying offer for Burnett. Only bites them if Burnett decides to sign with someone else.

No qualifying offer for Hopeless or Karstens either.

Didn't AJB say he only wants to play for bucs or retire?

Yes so there are now three situations:
1.) He retires. Oh well. Thanks AJ
2.) He signs, presumably for less than 14 mil, so it was a good move not extending a qualifying offer.
3.) He duped NH into thinking he wouldn't ever sign anywhere else, and gets paid more somewhere else since he doesn't come with the cost of a draft pick now that NH didn't offer him. Pittsburgh forgets everything that happened the last 2 years and he's the most hated man in town.

My thought is that if they feared he'd move on to another team, they would give him a QO.

I think the no QO is a pretty good indicator it's Bucs or retirement

Made the mistake of listening to filiponi last night talk about the Burnett qualifying offer issue. he seemed to implicate that burnett could feel "slighted" cause he didn't get the offer like the other big free agents. Maybe I didn't understand his point, because if that's what he was getting at, he's obnoxiously dumb.

I think non tendering him was the obvious thing to do. $14M is about $4M more than they should pay him and that atleast gives Burnett some more options. Players would prefer to not be tendered.

Had Burnett gotten a QO, that may have made teams less likely to try to sign him since I am pretty sure they would lose their first round pick if they signed him.

I think it would be a first or second round pick (teams in the top 15 lose their 2nd not the first). I guess I just figured NH's stance mirrored my stance on Burnett. I'd be plenty glad to have him back, but not going to get in a bidding war for the guy. It's not like he's a guy you pay any price to keep on. No reason for the QO, NH gives him a take it or leave it offer, if he declines he should be free to do whatever he wants with no hard feelings.

Not even a bidding war, there is no way I would want to sign a qualifying offer of 14.1M. At this point in his career he isnt worth that kind of money.

He was better than Tim Lincecum last year and Lincecum got 2 years $35M. If Burnett were open to signing with any team he'd get at least the qualifying offer.

Well, being in the AL will cover some of Lloyd's tactical ineptitude.
