Apparantly the model established by the Red Sox last year was to just sign a bunch of middle of the road FA's. So I guess the Phillies are adhering to that. But I think they missed the part where they have to dump off all the expensive dead weight (Rollins, Utley & Howard).

And Ned Coletti will wait by the phone when the Phillies decide to part ways with those horrible contracts.

See Steelers, Pittsburgh. RE: 2008.

The Steelers 2008 core got back to another Super Bowl, then went 12-4 the next year. It's being blown up after they went 8-8 in 2013 and had gotten to the end of the line. The Phillies went 81-81 in 2012 and 73-89 in 2013 and are in denial. What the Phillies are doing now would be like the Steelers deciding last year was an aberration and bringing back Hampton, Harrison and Colon while trading their first round pick.

I remember Byrd coming up through the Phillies' system before they went all scorched-earth on it.

I hope Ruben Amaro, Jr. has his job for life.

I've learned to accept that his negatives (falls asleep when he should get his starter, bunts with the top of the lineup).* The players like him and he isn't actively killing the team's chances like Dusty Baker.

*That's a lie- those things will drive me nuts next year when the season starts.

Did he espouse the virtues of the save statistic and the effectivness of bunting during his acceptance speech?

I think the manager of the year award should be changed to "we all expected this team to suck, but they didn't" award.

The Tigers look intent on dealing one of their starting pitchers. Fister and Scherzer would cost too much (financially and talent wise), but I think Porcello should be the target. I'm not sure what constitutes a ground ball pitcher label, but he's always over 50%. I think he would thrive in Pittsburgh.
