That would be a nice pickup, but would it close the door on re-signing Burnett I wonder?

He was healthy last year but his numbers were terrible. Secondary numbers showed he should have had better numbers than he did though. Similar to Burnett and Liriano the last two years and we all know how well that worked out for us.

Well after looking I see he only made 16 starts last year, but made 31 the year before and was pretty darn good. I still really like him as a strong bounce back candidate.

Pirates shouldn't be in the business of paying bounce back candidates 10M+ a year. 6M for Liriano and 5M / 8M respectively for Burnett is one thing. Given those prices I wouldnt do more than 8M.

http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/11/pirates-are-on-josh-johnsons-short-list.html

Johnson probably wouldn’t come as cheap as Burnett ($10 M per year) or Liriano (most likely $6+ M per year). For one, there’s the new money coming into baseball that has been raising prices. There’s also the fact that he’s seen as a guy who could bounce back rather easily. That wasn’t the case with Burnett and Liriano. As a result, Johnson will be in more demand and will command a higher price. It’s good to see that the Pirates could be finalists, but I don’t know if this means the Pirates will be signing Johnson.

I wouldn't take Williams' word too strongly here. Rotoworld implied that Johnson is looking to take a one year deal in a place where he's most likely to reestablish his value and then reenter the FA market next offseason for a multi year deal.

Coming off an injury-plagued season, Johnson is looking for a one-year deal to reestablish his value and test the market again next winter.

I guess to be fair, look at what Hudson just got. Rehabbing now and 38 years old.

That maybe the case, but Hudson just signed a 2yr 23M deal. I dont think 10M-12M for 1 year is as far-fetched as people think.

Well, Hudson doesn't have the shaky performance record that johnson has had recently. you have a pretty good idea what your getting for that money.

Have the Pirates had any discussions with AJ? Seems to me the longer they/he waits the more he is leaning towards retiring?
