Normally I'd say he'd get $10 million, but along with his struggles he's also only made 56 starts the past three seasons. I guess it just depends on how much the other suitors bid him up.

Johnson is officially injury prone. Hudson busted his ankle on a freak play. Injury concerns for both, yes, but worlds apart on the nature.

Agreed, but Hudson is also old. I guess he has been crazy durable over the past several years though.

I was hoping the pirates would make a run for huddy. He'd be a nice 3rd or 4th guy to eat some solid innings, with the question marks over some of the rotation. Plus I like him, he's always been steady.

I could see him taking his time and doing a Clemens.

I wish they would have been the best offer, because he'd be signed with the Braves right now.

I think the Pirates will be right around 8M for Johnson and I think that is fair. I just think they will be outbid, but with the Giants now signing Hudson who knows.

I doubt any decisions have been made regarding Burnett, but the longer he waits the more likely the decision is made for him.

Only so much money available here, if it starts getting allocated to guys like Josh Johnson, Burnett will either have to take much less here, sign somewhere else, or retire.

Well if they have Johnson or someone like that, money won't be the issue for Burnett, I would assume he'd be looking at minor leagues if he wanted to sign here.

I can see Tailion in the rotation before the All-Star break. If thats the case you have Cole and Tailion both making pennies. Liriano, Johnson, Burnett, and Morton for now would round out the rotation. Not bank breaking money there. If the Pirates go internal with regards to RF and wait for Polanco again, more saved. If they make a trade and dont bring back Jones/Sanchez at 1B coupled with bringing back Barmes at a reduced rate I cant see us spending all that much.

Hurtle demoted him from starter to bullpen after he couldn't win his first game. He is obviously in his doghouse and wasn't going to get a legit shot. Another prospect ruined.

Probably won't happen but watch Kris Johnson win a Cy Young some day.

Kris Johnson just wasn't a favorite of Bylsma Hurdle.

If Nutting weren't cheap Johnson, Burnett and Cano would be Pirates.

In all seriousness I wonder if the Pirates will up their offer to Burnett. I don't think they would have wanted both AJ and Johnson in the rotation this year. You could have talked me into Johnson as a high ceiling candidate who would have trade value if he pitches well but the team struggles. Unless there's someone I'm forgetting about on the market (very possible) I think I'd rather have the known commodity in Burnett.

Johnson probably wouldn’t come as cheap as Burnett ($10 M per year) or Liriano (most likely $6+ M per year). For one, there’s the new money coming into baseball that has been raising prices. There’s also the fact that he’s seen as a guy who could bounce back rather easily. That wasn’t the case with Burnett and Liriano. As a result, Johnson will be in more demand and will command a higher price. It’s good to see that the Pirates could be finalists, but I don’t know if this means the Pirates will be signing Johnson.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Padres have signed Josh Johnson to a one-year, $8 million contract.

Good call guy.

That site isn't good for anything but being able to see what all the prospects are doing in one place instead of bouncing around to a bunch of different spots. That and reading what Baseball America says about the Pirates.

Williams is a terrible writer IMO, he usually says the same thing 4 different ways within one article because he can't get his point across otherwise.

I feel the exact same way. The site is great for keeping up with the farm system, but some of his analysis is irritatingly inane.

8M plus the chance to receive another 1.25M in incentives for starts isnt that far off. But its not the base of 10M+ that he predicted. Even for that price, I am not disappointed that the Pirates didnt sign him
