Definitely make that trade on the Pirates' end.
I don't think that I do. Tulowitzki is an immediate upgrade no doubt, but you're giving up a lot for a guy who A)plays half his games in Coors, and B)misses time every year with injuries. Starling Marte had a 4.6 WAR this year, now I don't expect Polanco to step in and produce like that in 2014 but it's much more likely in 2015. Then with Hansen he gives you the opportunity to platoon some sort of Mercer/Walker/Hansen between SS & 2B. This keeps both RF and SS filled and cost controlled for years to come, allowing the Pirates to add future FA pieces as they see fit or even work out contracts for their own FA's. So under this we'll throw out (entirely arguable) 2015 WAR's as Polanco 4, Hansen 1, Mercer 1. Which almost matches Tulo's 5.6 from this year, add in replacement level RF and you're about even. The key in this scenario is not being on the hook for Tulowitzki's contract until 2020 which would hamper their ability to sign future FA's not to mention take a big chunk out of their own homegrown talent.
I threw these projected WAR numbers together quickly and randomly but would welcome further discussion.
