So what's a bigger need, an improvement at SS or 1B to stop the mediocre platooning?

you have a 3-4-5 of McCutchen, Tulowizki & Alvarez, that's a lot of runs coming from SS, 3B and CF. Basically any production you get out of 1B and RF is a bonus. i really don't think Polanco and Hanson are going to get a 5 WAR 1B or RF (tulo was a 5+ WAY guy last year).

He's all world at home, but still an 800 OPS guy on the road. His babip is much higher at home...that seems a bit random cause he has only 15 more career HR's at home.

Definitely make that trade on the Pirates' end.

I don't think that I do. Tulowitzki is an immediate upgrade no doubt, but you're giving up a lot for a guy who A)plays half his games in Coors, and B)misses time every year with injuries. Starling Marte had a 4.6 WAR this year, now I don't expect Polanco to step in and produce like that in 2014 but it's much more likely in 2015. Then with Hansen he gives you the opportunity to platoon some sort of Mercer/Walker/Hansen between SS & 2B. This keeps both RF and SS filled and cost controlled for years to come, allowing the Pirates to add future FA pieces as they see fit or even work out contracts for their own FA's. So under this we'll throw out (entirely arguable) 2015 WAR's as Polanco 4, Hansen 1, Mercer 1. Which almost matches Tulo's 5.6 from this year, add in replacement level RF and you're about even. The key in this scenario is not being on the hook for Tulowitzki's contract until 2020 which would hamper their ability to sign future FA's not to mention take a big chunk out of their own homegrown talent.

I threw these projected WAR numbers together quickly and randomly but would welcome further discussion.

He'd due another $135 million, so no, I wouldn't do that trade.

Scott Kazmir just got $22 million and two years from the Athletics.

Burnett's price continues to increase and now the A's are more likely to trade Brett Anderson. The Pirates should be inquiring about Anderson.

I wouldn't do Polanco for Tulo straight up. Polanco is going to be a top-5 prospect heading into the season. Tulo can't stay healthy.

I'd love Tulo on the Pirates but if the Rockies are trying to trade him that's a big red flag. Teams just don't move top-tier SS unless something is wrong.

The only reason you wouldnt do that is tuli's salary is unaffordable for the pirates. Otherwise is a no-brainer.

Pirates prospect Evan Chambers died in his sleep over the weekend, he was only 24. So sad to see, you never want to see this happen to someone so young.

From what I gathered from my ticket rep and the seating map on pirates.com, tickets might actually be hard to come by this year. I have tix to the two games I wanted and all but I wouldnt wait.

it sounds like they are creating false demand. i just received a call as well and after pressing him, there is a still a great deal of tickets available.

I think they bring somone in to platoon with Sanchez. I'm not sure they trust Lambo's defense at 1st. Lambo, Decker, Tabata and Snider will battle in spring training for the right field at bats. Then hopefully hold the position down until polanco forces his way into the lineup.

I've yet to see much from Snider. I do know he likes to cook/eat per Bucco announcers.

Yeah, Saturdays will all be packed but that's not out of the ordinary save for a couple early ones. They'll probably have solid crowds on most Friday and Sundays but through the week will still be fine.

I pulled up a random week night game and there are at least 10k available and there are some sections they aren't selling yet. Demand is definitely up a bit but there are so many games that getting tickets isn't going to be an issue unless you can only go on a weekend or just want to see the big draws.

I still think they're quite a ways away from regularly selling out or even coming close to it on week nights.

I'd like to see Tabata step up and take that RF spot. Long shot, yes, but he has the most potential out of those on the roster. Flashes it for stretches, it's frustrating.

They're all long shots to provide consistent production. They've essentially been in the same position with the corner outfield and first base for a few years running now. 2 years ago, presley and Tabata both flopped, it forced the Pirates to bring Marte up from AAA. Jones was having a great year at first in 2012. Last year Marte solidified left, but RF and 1B were unproductive to say the least. Forced the Pirates to bring in Byrd and Morneau for the Playoffs. This year they have Polanco to come up and save RF when all the long shots flop. The question is do they pay the 5-7 million for a question mark to come play first in April or do they try in house options until pressed to make some sort of midseaon move.
