It's pretty false. He's on the path to becoming average to above average defensively, and average at the plate. At this point it looks like he's profiling as a #16-30 ranked starter, or a pretty good backup.

Baseball isn't going to do anything that helps small market teams any time soon. They cracked down on draft spending to keep small market teams from being successful.

when he got drafted, there were pundits that claimed his defense was near major league ready. now when you read about him, its always "gee his defense is finally catching up to his bat"

but his bat was comatose for most of 2011 and 2012.

The big market teams would have started overspending in the draft if not for the slotting system.

The latin america slot system was a good thing too.

Now Coonelly is spearheading the Asia/Cuba posting system.

If the penny pinching Marlins can dish out $21 million for three years of Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the bargain hunting A's can drop $10 million on a closer, the Pirates can give Mike Napoli $12-$14 million to play 1B and $12-$14 on a 200 inning pitcher.

Bud specifically called out the Pirates for their draft spending. Perhaps the big market teams would have started spending money in the draft, but for the larger teams they got more value out of spending $5M on a closer than a draft pick. It's the opposite for smaller market teams and MLB decided that allowing the Pirates to spend money on something other than free agents was destroying baseball. Meanwhile the Tigers spend a bajillion on Prince Fielder and still get a competitive balance draft pick.

The Pirates would lose a 1st round pick if they signed Napoli. The Marlins won't.

If you think Napoli=title in 2014 or 15 it's worth it. It really puts the Pirates in a bind- this is supposedly a deep draft. Is there a team that has an above-average but overpaid first baseman they'd like to unload via trade?

Rockies probably aren't shopping Tulo. I assume he would of been top priority for the Cards at short (followed by Profar), and they would have the prospects to get him. So either his price was too high, or the Rockies didn't want to deal. I don't think Pirates would want to deal their prospects nor do they have the money for Tulo.

I wonder if the Pirates offered Morneau something... Byrd responded to a fan on twitter that he never received an offer from the Pirates

Depends on how much cash the Rockies were kicking in to the deal. When healthy he's probably worth the money he's got left, and if he plays 150 games in 2014 or 2015 the Pirates are winning the NL. That's not hyperbole. Look at what the Pirates did with Hopeless at SS this year. Then look at Tulo's road numbers (.819 OPS for his career) and his numbers at PNC (.990 OPS, albeit in only 42 ABs). You'd also be upgrading 2B since Mercer could hit against lefties instead of Walker. Marte/Tulo/Cutch/Pedro will do damage. The problem is getting 150 games out of him. He hasn't done that since 2009. He's been banged up the last few years and he turns 30 next year. I'm learning the hard way that your body doesn't recover like it used to once you get into your 30s.

The Rockies may very well be pushing the reset button- they traded away Dexter Fowler earlier (I've always thought Fowler would be really good and he's kinda leveled off at above average).

I think it's very likely that Morneau's just finished. His power looked completely gone. PNC is a place that can be friendly to lefty power hitters (ask Pedro or Garrett Jones, before Jones died last year) and he couldn't drive the ball at all.
