Question for the prospect followers. How well will Hansons game translate to the majors? Especially his bat? I believe he's what 21? And he doesn't seem much bigger than Rafael Belliard was.

Polanco was named ROY and MVP in the Dominican League. Definitely should have traded him for Alex Rios.

Jerry Sands and Ryan Reid were claimed off waivers. Not sure what team finds either of them useful enough for a waiver claim.

If the Pirates wanted to trade Marte or Polanco, they'd no doubt get more for Polanco, even though Marte was a 5 win player in his first full season with room to grow and would be even more valuable in CF. Baseball is weird.

Marte reminds me of Soriano. I can see him becoming more of a power hitter as he gets older. 2014 is going to be his age 25 season, there's still plenty of time for him to improve on the areas where he's struggles.

Looks like the Pirates traded for a first baseman from the Rangers. Miles Mikolas from the Pirates in exchange for Chris McGuiness from the Rangers was the deal. I'm guessing based on what the Pirates parted with, McGuiness is a minor leaguer or platoon guy?

Huntington flipped the reliever he got from the Padres for Dickeron to the Rangers for some LH 1B named McGuinness. just looks like depth at the position though. He has reverse splits, so I can't imagine he was brought in to platoon with Sanchez this season.

Does he just state the guys walk rate (as a pitcher or catcher), then give a reason whether or not he thinks he can improve on it?

Also, if the guy plays 1B, he's discounting numbers that are put up below AA. That's because 1B is a position that is typically offense oriented and he needs to see a guy perform above the AA level before he starts considering him a real prospect (except in the cases of Matt Curry and Stetson Allie, where he was definitely prematurely talking those guys up).

Looks like an older Alex Dickerson.

its hard to reconcile why it seems like most observers (and the pirates, for that matter) love curry but did not like dickerson

It probably has to do with Dickerson never having really exceeded expectations. Matt Curry had one half season in WV where he had a 1100+ OPS. Other than that they've been almost the same player age/level wise

I don't think either (Curry or Dickerson) hits like an MLB first baseman.

I watched "42" with my father the other night, which dug deeper into some good history.

My father's uncle owned the Salisbury (NC) Pirates in the early 50s, but columbia sr. had never mentioned that he had met Branch Rickey. He became the Buccos GM in 1950 and stopped through to check out some of their prospects in the SALLY league. So my father got to hang out with Branch in the owners box for a few games and shoot the **** about our great past time.

If I'm not mistaken Rickey tried out Koufax as a youngster and his control was horrible. Know anything about that?

I did not.

As an aside, my father - who is quite the geezer* :pop: - says that Koufax is the greatest pitcher he has ever seen.
Perhaps that's a discussion that deserves a thread to itself.

The Pittsburgh Fan right next to PNC Park. That is where I got my Pirate hat with post season patch. The PNC Park store didn't even have one when I went.

I think there's a Lids in the PIT airport, if you happen to be passing through there.
