How come every year, there is the full slate of opening day games, followed by only half the teams or so playing on Tuesday? I'm assuming it's to set up the Fri-Sun three game series for most teams, but wasn't sure.

I think it's a built in make up day for instances where there is a rainout on opening day.

My last "home" stadium was Shea and I wouldn't be caught dead there in the month of April.
Way too cold.

The baseball season is just crazy (too?) long, for the weather at both ends of the season.

What doesn't make any sense to me is why they start the season in northern cities? Why not just have all the southern and western teams host the first week?

I'm guessing the logistics for that are too difficult, but I'm not sure if they actually try it or not.

I feel you, Jay Lustig.

[Lustig] said the time for a new owner may never be more ideal.

“But Bob Nutting told me something that his grandfather told his father and his father told him. And that's when the Nuttings own something, they own it forever.

“I just felt I'm too old to find out how long that forever is.”

I was reading SI's baseball preview issue today and their piece on the Pirates. The last line of the article summed it up perfectly. Talking about Taillon and Cole, "As usual with the Pirates, its about the future."

This is what I figured:

“(Nutting) cleaned up the finances and put the franchise on solid ground. ... Now did Bob Nutting and I have personality clashes? Absolutely. I've talked to him several times and tried to convince him that now is the time to sell to a multi-billionaire who is willing to come in here and spend more money and see if he can make the Pirates win.

“Last fall I finally realized that what I wanted wasn't going to happen. So I got out.”

I think he's actually very complimentary of Nutting. At the very least, it's interesting to get an insider's view. And I'm not entirely sure I agree with Lustig at all in regards to "small" revenue teams needing to take large losses to compete.

I must have missed where Tampa and Cincinnati and Oakland are running $200M payroll teams out there on a regular basis. As the players have gotten better and attendance has improved the payroll has gone up. Coonelly was ripped for saying that would happen a few years ago but it turns out that's how the world works.

So wait... are you saying more revenue allows for more spending?

That's an amazing concept to me

Obvioulsy there is a correlation between higher attendance and higher payroll. But I remember Coonely seeming to imply that the payroll increase was contingent on the attendance growing..

Wandy pitching like he wants to get back to the dugout in the hurry......I think Erik Bedard would have only thrown two pitches by now.

Pens game start yet, debating whether to watch that or watch Jackson go for the single game strikeout record.
