Benson's wife was insane. Are you crediting him for marrying that woman?

Went with Meares over Hopeless because a) Hopeless is at least good defensively and on the field, while Meares battled injuries; b) Meares was signed to a pointless contract extension after a good spring training and then hurt his wrist.

JVB was made a pitcher when he should have been a hitter, and then his arm blew up. I have sympathy for him. I have none at all for Fat Jimmy.

She actually came up in conversation last night...basically that pittsburgh needs some sort of tabloid news source. The PG is basically a non stop local puff piece. **** has to really hit the fan for anything to get reported on, I don't think anyone really knew Anna Benson existed until he went to New York and reporters do work and exploit people like that.

I mean, this seems kind of ridiculous to be asking for a tabloid paper, but the stuff the local celebs get away with here is pretty crazy, the PG is afraid to report on anything. The stuff people like ravenstahl got away with wouldn't happen in other places.

Seriously if one more person says Barmes is good defensively.. He leads the league in errors. Or at least did last week. I don't care enough to check but either way he is up there. Ugh.

I don't really understand this narrative, either.

Errors aren't the best way to measure defense- a player with no range at all will have fewer errors because he gets to less balls. Hopeless is 6th in UZR for NL shortstops w/100 plate appearances and is 2nd in range behind Andrelton Simmons...but he's not as good defensively this year as we was last year. And with his bat he needs to be Ozzie Smith Jr. (Spoiler Alert: He's not.)

Oh so he's in the top 40th percentile. Pretty mediocre, if anything.

He's proven to be an above average defensive SS over the previous two years, something I don't think we will be saying about Mercer any time soon. Not sure 48 games is a good measure, but as Rocco says the guy needs to be an exceptional defensive SS to carry that bat and he is not. Not sure that Mercer is the answer, but this is an area that needs an upgrade quickly.

Mercer is around 280, and at this point we need a bat more than a good glove. In an ideal world I'd like Asdrubal to come over at the deadline and do his thing, but until then I think Mercer has to get the majority of the ABs.

I don't think weakening the defense, if Mercer does that, is a good strategy given the pitchers' penchant for pitching to contact.

Why is weakening the offense okay? We're in the bottom 8 in pretty much every offensive category.

It's not ok, but the strength of the team is the pitching staff, not sure why you'd make it more difficult on them when you're 12 games over .500. Again, they need someone other than Barmes, not sure that Mercer is that guy.

I gotta ask why Jose Mesa didn't make the list?

I was working in Pittsburgh in the summers of 2003 and 2004. Mike Williams made me physically ill in 2003 when I'd go to games and watch him fart around. Mesa wasn't bad in 2004, and I wasn't around the summer of 2005. Had I been in town and going to games regularly that summer he'd have made the list.

I see where you're coming from. Different philosophies I guess. I think pitching being the strength, we can afford to give up a little glove because our pitching can compensate. Either way I think we can agree we need something at the deadline.

Pitching can't compensate unless you have someone running up 10+ ks a night out there. They're not trying to make hitters miss.

I honestly didn't think Mike Williams was all that bad. But I was always infuriated with this towns obsession with Craig Wilson.

Williams was frustrating because he always put people on, but he was effective at closing games.
