I was thinking about this at lunch, and the Pirates really need to win the division. I like their chances in a 5 game series, hate their chances in 1 game. When your biggest strength is the depth of your rotation, you are screwed in a 1 game playoff.

One game playoff would most likely be vs the Reds too. (I know a ton can change with still half a year to play... season is way too long.)

Pirates need to avoid a 1 game playoff at all costs. Play your best 5 starters.

The three best records in the MLB all come from the NL Central...that is pretty remarkable. If the mediocre records of the Jays and Rays weren't so ballyhooed, the NL Central would be the absolute best division in baseball.

If they simply stand pat, there might still be enough talent here for a run at contention this year. A midlevel trade could provide a needed boost. And if the team decided to be truly bold for the first time in more than 20 years … Pirates fans might be raising a lot more than the Jolly Roger.

Assuming, of course, that Giancruz Stanton or whoever he is in Miami is available. Is he any good? Could the Bucs get him for Andrew Lambo?

Getting Giancarlo Giacomo Stanton's first name wrong is surely now a board meme.

They should just sit tight till the deadline, other teams will look to sell as the deadline approaches, no reason to start offering the farm for Stanton right now.

....what players, and how much of Rios' salary would the Sox have to take to get him? Morse would be the more logical, but do you want him in your outfield? Yikes!!! I hear his name come up, but I think Seattle might want way too much.....

There's no difference between putting Morse in your OF and putting Jones out there with Sanchez at first base. It would be an entirely pointless transaction.

I'd much rather have Alex Rios than Morse. Not sure what it would take to get him but it wouldn't be a top prospect.

I agree with Troy though, sit tight for a bit and wait a little closer to the deadline.

Morse is a right handed hitter with pop, which this team needs, so I'm not seeing the pointless transaction, it leaves your outfield with Marte/Cutch/Morse, it would hopefully kill the Snider/Jones platoon in right, but if it's the defensive comparison you're making, then yea they're about the same. I would like to see Morse hitting fourth to give Cutch some protection, and as much as I'd like to see Pedro bat fifth to protect Morse, it might be better to have Walker or Martin fifth and Pedro sixth, if these do what they average that's a good ML lineup. Rios just doesn't have enough power for me to make that deal. I think Marte/Walker/Cutch/Morse/Martin/Alvarez/SanJones/Mercer can win games if the pitching takes a day or two off later in the year.

The problem right now is that they have no one to play in right field when they face a tough leftie. You'd think they'd have someone in the system that could replace Tabata in that regard...but nope.
