It can't be a coincidence that the only hitter who looks like he cares is Marte, who is still young enough that he has to try hard to keep his place. Tabata needed a good spring and had it, and now he's crap. Sanchez needed a good spring and had it, and now he's crap.

The team pretty much doesn't care under Hurdle and their approach at the plate shows as much. They're going up there to get their ABs over quickly. It would at least take some time for the players to tune out the new guy.

Some of it is apathy. Most of it is suck.

Pedro will get one more AB to pad his K totals. Swinging or looking? I'm betting looking. Swinging would take too much effort.

The team isn't this bad. They aren't good, but it appears to this fan that there's a lot of apathy, specifically on the corners.

I wouldn't keep Hurdle either. You are right about that. I just think that the Pirates only magic number this year is 21.

Would be nice to see some smart, hard-working baseball even if it still results in a sub-.500 year.

El Blimpo went down swinging, which surprises me.

Just remember, the fans and media demanded the Pirates take Pedro in 2008 to prove they'd be willing to negotiate with Boras clients. There's a saying about what happens when you listen to fans.

Everybody and their mothers would have selected Alvarez in that slot. Whether it was the fans, media, or the organization. Everyone knew that was the right pick.

I saw a funny thing on the Pirates twitter either saturday or sunday morning that said that the Pirates were the only team who hadn't given up more than 3 runs at that point. Then I realized they had 1 win and started laughing.

It's supposed to be in the upper 70s and lower 80s for the series in Arizona. Is that a warm enough temperature for the Pirates to hit, or do we need to be pushing 90? Ya know, since people were saying it was a little too chilly for their bats to warm up before.

Aren't the Pirates' bats usually at their best through June...aka before the temperatures actually get hot.

Kristy Robinson ‏@Kristy_Robinson 5m
#pirates lineup vs Dbacks: Marte 7 Walker 4 McCutchen 8 Jones 9 Martin 2 Alvarez 5 Snider 9 Barmes 6 Rodriguez 1

Glad to see The Sanchize getting a seat. At some point the Pirates have to play Snider and figure out what they have. El Blimpo continues to play because Hurdle wouldn't think of putting the poor guy under pressure even though he only hits when he may lose his job. Don't want to upset the delicate flower.

3-0 count and can't even move the runner over. Nice #2 at bat.

He at least hit the ball decently hard. Just right at someone.

So it's a strong .095?

I'll take him making good contact over El Blimpo waving at pitches while feigning that he cares.

Travis Snider with a 2-run single. Hurdle will bench him for Sanchize for a week now, but it's 3-0 Bucs.
