Can't wait for the same people complaining that he should be in the derby are complaining when he is cold coming out cause it always messes with guy's swing.

Does it really matter?

It seems like squabbling over who should be the backup center at the Pro Bowl.

Does anyone think that his swing isn't always a home run swing?

That's what I said. Guy at work said it was gonna mess up his swing, and i mean.. Does anyone think he's some solid, line-drive contact hitter?

Gene Collier wrote an article citing Bobby Abreu hitting 40+ in the home run derby and then getting 6 HR's the rest of the season after that. Probably where the "it'll mess up his swing" derives from.

No, "it'll mess up his swing" comes from the idea that guys like Griffey and Sheffield who have perfect line drive swings that happen to go over the fence messing up their swing because the alter it to get more home runs in the derby. It was around long before Abreu was in the derby and itmakes perfect sense. It doesn't make sense for a Dunn or an Alvarez though who always swing like that.

I always refer to Alvarez to all or nothing. It's either going over the fence or in the catchers mitt.

Made the mistake of reading cook's column today. It's about how good the starting pitching is for the Pirates.

That doesn't mean you are wrong if you are skeptical. You earned that right last season after watching the Pirates go 16-36 down the stretch, one of the worst collapses in baseball history. Their team ERA was 3.47 before the All-Star break, 4.29 after. No one represented that failure more than McDonald, who followed a superb first half with a pathetic second.

But it's hard to imagine any of the starters falling apart like that this season. Not Liriano, who often was inconsistent with the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox. Not Locke and Cole, who are mere babies in a baseball sense. Certainly not Burnett.

That is how he ended the article...wtf? So people have a right to be skeptical, but they shouldn't, and here's the reasons they should be skeptical?

It seems to me that the teams that would want to be cutting salary, don't have any players that actually fit the profile of a pricey veteran going into his walk year, or have already gutted their team of all those players. Teams at the bottom of the standings with guys to move will be looking for good prospects in return (thinking like the Blue Jays or the White Sox). I don't believe digging deep into the system for a guy like Rios or Lind is a good idea for the Pirates.

Seattle might be the best partner for the Pirates, but not sure how much Morales, Morse or Ilbanez will help.

Somewhat interesting and attainable. Decent defensive player. You wonder if the spike in power will continue, but he's always been a big, strong guy...I mean, you compare his strikeout numbers this year to his career, and you can see why he's hitting more HR this year. Not sure they need another 170 strike-out guy in the lineup, guess it depends on what else is out there and the cost.

Could be a bench option as well.

With all the Pedro HR Derby stuff going on Vanderbilt posted this video on their Facebook page today.

It's Pedro hammering a home run while some joker chants "over-rated" during his at-bat. Listen for the "woooo" when he crosses the plate.

Its pretty awesome, it would have been funnier if he actually heard the chant and then gave a thumbs up to that section after he crossed home plate.

He's just a big dude. He's a decent enough runner and has displayed pretty good athleticism at 3rd base, so his size gets a big whatev from me. Its not like he's Pablo Sandoval.

Yet, someone sent me a timeline today of Sandoval, and showed pictures of him swinging from 2009-2013 and stats, and the first person I thought of was Pedro, every year Panda is fat his stats are awful, when he's thin he's an animal......

Someone should really go knock on Rocco's door and make sure he's alright. He disappeared from this thread.

Pedro's really been way more consistant lately. His slumps arent lasting the weeks and weeks until he hit another HR like in the past. Hopefully a sign of how his game is gonna be.

.256 Pedro flirting with respectability. Considering what he did in April that's a pretty remarkable average.
