Any time he gets mentioned as one of the all time great pitchers with Carlton, Spahn, Maddux, et al. I die inside a little. He's been a great closer but closer is incredibly overrated. Despite all of his saves his best season according to WAR was 1996...when he was a setup man and used in high leverage situations.

No, he is not in the same group as a starting pitcher. They are different skills. He is, without question, the greatest closer ever though. And undoubtedly his best season was 1996, because he was used two innings at a time and shortened the game to 6 innings since they had Wetteland to close.

Annnnnnd the "looks like Games 3,4,5 of World Series will be at PNC" cracks are already played out. Although credit that its actually less of a joke than when we heard it after previous all star games.

When they announced that the best closer in the game was coming in, I was confused because the NL was batting and Kimbrel had just come out and had relieved Chapman. I'd say he's definitely the most overrated player at his role, but maybe not the most overrated in baseball...thats probably Harper.

I tend to agree with this. Though I will say that I think some "great" closers are more products of their role than actually good pitchers, but I don't think Rivera fits that mold. If anything, the definition of his role hurt his value.

Though as you say, comparing him to any great starting pitcher is a bit insulting, imo.

Not sure about that. Defense is subpar (despite his ridiculous number of gold gloves) but he is still a top 5 (or very close) SS all time overall.

No, he's not the best closer today. Still great, but not the best. But no closer has been as great as he has for as long as he has. His worst year was a 3.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 30 saves. His postseason ERA is 0.70 and WHIP is 0.76.

No, he's definitely the best closer of all time, but it was irritating when it was presented that way.

It's Joe Buck and Tim McCarver... what do you expect? Although I think the historical implication was probably there.

Only 2 HRs in 141 post-season innings is still shocking.
