Eh, I seem to remember laughing at parts. Not out loud like I would watching, say, Baseketball (no particular reason I picked that one), but still, filled with amusing moments.

It's all about tone when it comes to genre, IMO. "Crash" for example is a straight drama (though a craptastic one at that). Eternal Sunshine is not a straight drama.

this is at least the 3rd time i've said this, and this will probably be the 3rd time it's ignored...i don't assume SLP is bad. it might be a perfectly pleasant movie, but i discredit it as oscar-caliber because of its un-compelling premise. and the fact that the culmination revolves around a dance contest certainly doesn't help.

Yeah, I get that, and I just disagree. Premise shouldn't have anything to do when discussing a movie's merits. A good movie is all in the execution of its premise, whatever it may be.

The people cast in Silver Linings Playbook can actually act. Thie movie (I'm assuming, never saw it) is a bad movie with lousy actors.

Assuming that Love Happens is bad without seeing it is different than assuming SLP is good without seeing it? And Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston are both good enough actors.

No, that's pretty much the same scenario, you're right. And agreed, especially with the former -- Eckhart is solid.

But assuming SLP is bad because Love Happens is bad is where the issue is, I think.

What were those films' budgets again? Point is, once a certain amount of money is put into a film, you'd better believe they're looking for attractive actors/actresses to fill the main roles.

Apparently there's a lot of people that think Jennifer Lawrence isn't all that great looking, so, you know, maybe give that movie a chance

And they hired a good-looking actress in Kate Winslet and made her less attractive looking in Eternal Sunshine. That's even worse man. Just give the part to a more homely looking actress. They could certainly use the work.

I'm obviously being a bit tongue-in-cheek here, but the point still remains.

I have a friend who used to be the Admin Assistant to a VP of Production at MGM. Big time guy, used have a company with Steve McQueen. Anyway, she worked for him for six years, iirc. Every year, he let her cast his Oscar votes. Not fill the ballot out with his picks... he let her vote for her own choices. (She would always ask me about the Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing categories)

And I got to cast a Grammy ballot once, because my boss - who was at the time the president of the L.A. NARAS chapter - wasn't going to bother that year. So I asked him if I could vote, and he gave me the ballot. NARAS, btw, is the organization that puts on the Grammys.

Point being: Academy membership and Academy voters can be two quite different things.
