they definitely go hand in hand. I don't imagine any pope in my lifetime being pro-gay in any way, shape, or form. Pope John Paul II did accept evolution, so who knows.

For what is worth: Out of the 13 candidates the Guardian listed as "papabile", Bergoglio was one of the two they listed as "moderate." The other 11 were "conservative."
